Edgar graduated from Delmont High School in 1941. In 1942 he attended the fall quarter at South Dakota State until he returned to Delmont to help on the family farm. He was an active 4-H club member and then a club leader for over 50 years.

He was inducted into the South Dakota 4-H Leaders Hall of Fame in 2002. 4-H was one of his true passions and he worked at the swine and sheep barns and also exhibited at the State Fair for many years. He had stated he had been going to the fair for over 65 straight years with his last job being the Superintendent at the Horticulture building.

The State Fair was a special place for him and this is where he met his future wife Evelyn Engelhardt, who at the time was exhibiting sheep. After they married they both worked at the State Fair with the 4-H program, Evelyn as a nurse in the 4-H dorms and Edgar with the 4-H livestock exhibits. Edgar married Evelyn Engelhardt of Bancroft, SD on June 22, 1947.

To this union 4 children were born and together they raised their family on the farm northeast of Delmont. Evelyn passed away December 23, 1992. While 4-H took up much of his time he was also involved with the County and State Extension service, Douglas County Fair Board, served on the Belmont township board and was the township assessor for many years.

He was involved in numerous community and church activities and served on many local and state boards for these organizations. As a member of Bethany Reformed Church he taught Sunday school and held many different positions in the church over the years. While farming was his life long occupation he also held the position of Douglas County Director of Equalization from 1975 until his retirement in 1988.

During his retirement years Edgar was involved with the M-2 Prison visitation program at the Springfield facility and the South Dakota State Penitentiary in Sioux Falls. He was involved with the Gideon International for many years and supported many other worthwhile causes throughout his life. On April 30, 1994 Edgar married Anetta (Mehlhaff) Hartman in Sioux Falls, SD.

They resided in Delmont, SD until 2001 when they moved to Sioux Falls where they were active in many activities. Since they lived close to the Active Generation Senior Center he became involved as a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program helping with the packing and loading of delivery vehicles and continued doing this until he moved to Edgewood Assisted Living in October 2017. He enjoyed his many years volunteering at Active Generations and his work with the M-2 program.

He truly missed his friends and the people at Active Generations over the last couple of years. He had recently been presented the “Service to Mankind Award” by the Sioux Falls Sertoma International for his years of volunteer work in the community. Over the years Edgar enjoyed traveling and had visited many areas of the United States and had taken trips half way around the world visiting India, Germany and several other countries.

He was also an avid gardener and supplied many people with produce in the summer months and also preserved much of the produce for use through out the year.
