Mary Ann’s Obituary Mary Ann Steele, age 95, died peacefully surrounded by her family on Wednesday, April 17, 2019 at North Central Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD. Her funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at 11:00am at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Pipestone, MN. In lieu of flowers please consider making a memorial donation to Helping Hands Assisted Living 1000 E. Teakwood St., Brandon, SD 57005.

Mary Ann was born on January 16, 1924 to Ernest Joseph and Christina Elizabeth (Van Dam) Meyer on a farm near Sherman, SD. Shortly after, her family moved to a farm near Dell Rapids, SD. She attended St. Mary’s Catholic School in Dell Rapids.

In 1936, she moved with her family to a farm near Holland, MN, and attended school there. Upon completion of her education, Mary Ann helped area families with their housecleaning. On July 13, 1944, she was united in marriage to Leonard Steele at St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Pipestone, MN.

Following their marriage Mary Ann was employed at Armours. She also worked at Bradsted Sewing Company, and Pipestone Community Hospital. In 1975, she began working at Lange’s Café in the bakery.

In 1988, she decided to slow down a bit and worked part time at Hardees, the Mayfair Motel and Super 8. Mary Ann was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Pipestone. She enjoyed quilting, refinishing antique furniture, and fishing with her husband and family.

She enjoyed going to bingo with friends. Mary Ann loved traveling with her children and had many adventures; Walker, MN, Washington DC, California, Las Vegas, Branson, and North Carolina. Her greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

In 2016, Mary Ann left her home in Pipestone and moved to Helping Hands Assisted Living in Brandon, SD. She was so happy there with the staff and residents. She enjoyed her time playing bingo and other games and activities.

She is lovingly remembered by her two children, Leonard Steele and his wife Rose from Crossville, TN and Carol Steele-Stoakes and her husband Terry from Sioux Falls, SD; two grandsons, Shawn Steele (Sonya) and Chad Johnson; six great-children, Jacob, Jeffrey, and Alexa Steele, Cieara Hyronemeus, Tristan and Remington Johnson. Two sisters, Betty Einck of Redwood Falls, MN and Darlene Ford of Pipestone MN. Mary Ann was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard and daughter Susan, four brothers, Nicholas, Edward, Ernest and Clarence, and one sister, Ardis Veen.
