Dr. Alice’s Obituary Alice Helen Wentz Flagg was born in Philadelphia , PA on September 4, 1930 to Eugenia Feuerer and William Wentz. Her father was a pastry chef who immigrated to the US from Leutkirch, Germany. Her mother who immigrated from Mulhouse, France was not the finest cook.

As a result, Alice became an aficionado of cake, cookie, bread (with butter), and candy at an early age. Pastry would become a life-long passion. She spoke only German until she went to school at age 5.

She was raised in the Swampoodle area of North Philadelphia on Bailey Street near Connie Mack Stadium. During her youth, she attended the Mediator Lutheran Church. Alice attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls.

On scholarship, she studied biology at the University of Pennsylvania. The summer after graduation from college, she worked in a lab at The Henry Phipps Institute where she met the love of her life, Walter Boyd Flagg, Sr They married in February 1954.

Alice was blessed to have an instant family as Walter’s sons -Walter Jr. And Michael-from his first marriage to Roseanne Jennings lived together with them in a home in West Philadelphia. Alice matriculated at Temple University School of Medicine the fall after she completed undergraduate work, She was one of 7 women in her medical school class. In October of 1955, she was blessed with a daughter Susan.

On graduating medical school in 1959, Alice completed a one year rotating internship. She taught nursing students for 10 years. In October of 1965, Stephanie was born.

The family moved to Mt. Airy in 1966. Alice became a stay-at-home mom.

She was an active force in the parent teacher association at John Jenks School . She tutored students at Jenks. She was tireless in her devotion to her daugthers.

She sewed clothes for herself and for Susan and Stephanie. She enjoyed shopping in a variety of malls with her sister Jean. She and Walter had a love for the arts, and they exposed their children to art exhibits, broadway plays, and musical concerts.

She and Walter were fans of jazz music. They went to concerts and jazz clubs man Steve Harvey. She converted to Catholicism in 1999 and was a devoted member at St Raymond’s Church.

She was active in bible study and RCIA ministries. . Throughout her life, Alice was an fierce advocate for those in need of help.

She loved people and was loved in return by all who had the chance to know her. Her children often told her that she was love. Alice was predeceased by Walter Sr., her sons Walter Jr. And Michael Sr., her sister and brother-in-law Jean and Jason Robinson.

She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted daughters Susan and Dr. Stephanie, Norris Benns, Esq. niece Dara Turner, nephew Andy Turner III and great nephew Ricky Mays, grandchildren Catrina Cooley Flagg, Dawn Flagg Davis, Dijuana Flagg-Davis, Michael Flagg Jr. , Ebon Flagg Sr., Dr. Brienne Flagg, Brian Flagg, and a host of great-grand children, great- great grandchildren, great nephews , great nieces, and cousins and a special adopted niece Joan Jefferson.
