Dr. Mary Elizabeth Laing Springs December 17, 1964 – February 13, 2019 Share this obituary Send Sympathy Gifts Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Sympathy Card Dr. Mary Elizabeth Laing Springs, age 54 of Three Rivers, formerly of Seguin, passed away on February 13, 2019. Mary was born in Austin, Texas on December 17th 1964 to Reverend Charles Laing, Sr. and Peggy Ann Donaldson Laing. As a preacher’s daughter, Mary spent her childhood jumping off of church balconies, eating potluck dinners, and adapting as they moved from church to church across Texas.
When Mary was in the 8th grade, her family moved to Georgetown, Texas where she graduated from Georgetown High School in 1983. In high school, Mary was a state champion debater, setting her up for a lifetime of winning arguments and being in charge. In 1987, Mary graduated from Centenary College in Louisiana where she was the Social Chairwoman for the Beta Iota Chapter of the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority, a Kappa Alpha Southern Belle, and worked two part-time jobs.
Mary began her career in education in Killeen, Texas as a high school teacher. After two years, Mary moved to Lake Jackson, Texas where she took a job at Brazoswood High School and met her husband Wayne Springs. In 1993, Mary moved to Lockhart, Texas and gave birth to her first daughter Elizabeth.
Mary worked as a teacher, assistant principal, and principal in Seguin ISD from 1994 to 1999 all while working towards a Master’s Degree from Texas State University, which she received in 1996. In 1997, Mary welcomed her second daughter Grace into her life. In 1999, Mary became the principal of Navarro High School in Geronimo, Texas.
In 2000, Mary’s daughter Madison was born. In 2006, Mary moved to Kingsville, Texas to be the superintendent of Santa Gertrudis ISD. Mary received her Educational Doctorate from Texas A&M University in 2015.
In 2016, Mary became the superintendent of Three Rivers ISD in Three Rivers, Texas where she lived and served until her death. Throughout her life, Mary impacted thousands of lives over seven school districts, helped to build three schools, and establish the football program at Santa Gertrudis ISD. Mary strongly believed in making tough choices that always put the students first wherever she was.
Mary is preceded in death by her father Charles and mother Peggy. Mary is survived by her husband Wayne Springs, brother Charles Edward Laing, Jr. (Diana), sister Nicole Laing-Kotzur (Dale), daughters Elizabeth Stanley (Cooper), Grace Springs, and Madison Springs, nephew Chase Laing, nieces Chelsea Laing and Calista Hardeman, and cherished companion Bossy the bulldog. As Mary loved being on a football field, a memorial celebration honoring her will be held on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at 5 p.m. at Erwin-Lee Field at Navarro High School in Geronimo, Texas with Rev.
Jeremy Roy officiating. A reception will follow in the Navarro High School Cafeteria. Private interment will be held at a later date at Dugger Cemetery.
