OBITUARY Dr. Peter David Fugazzi January 20, 1941 – July 25, 2018 Dr. Peter David Fugazzi, M.D. (January 20, 1941—July 25, 2018) of East Lansing, MI. Beloved son, husband, father, grandfather and physician. As the only child of Helen and Alexander Fugazzi, he was born and raised in the Bronx, NY.
He grew up in a multi-generational, immigrant household speaking both English and Italian. He was a proud 1958 graduate of Mount Saint Michael Academy, an all-boys Catholic high school. He graduated from Adelphi University on Long Island, NY.
He worked for many years in the moving and storage business—Greyhound Van Lines–with his Uncle Anthony Razzetti. In 1976, he received a medical degree (M.D.) from the University of Bologna School of Medicine and Surgery in Italy. He completed a general surgical internship at Long Island Jewish Hospital in Queens, NY followed by family practice residency here at Sparrow Hospital.
He was in private practice for more than 30 years in Lansing. As a family practitioner he delivered hundreds of babies and cared for thousands of patients throughout the area. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Roberta (Farrelly) and two sons, James (Michelle Matousek) of Okemos, MI and Alexander (Tracey Taketa) of Henderson, NV, as well as six grandchildren, Andrew (11), Xan (11), Gabriella (9), Annabell (9), Arlynn (6) and Ava (4).
Also, sisters-in-law, Rita and Gail Farrelly of Bronxville, NY; brother-in-law, Jim Farrelly of Manchester, NJ and cousins, Albert (Kathleen) Razzetti and Francis Pertusi and their families of Long Island, NY. Locally, he was active in the Ingham County Medical Society. He was a founding parishioner of St. Martha Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was also an active member of Alpha Phi Delta, a national Italian-American heritage fraternity. His professional life was devoted to his patients and he derived immense joy in caring for them. He cultivated numerous close friendships from the practice of medicine including patients, hospital staff and colleagues.
While working, he rarely missed daily lunch with his mother. Outside of work, he enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly his grandchildren who called him Nonno. He enjoyed boating on the Great Lakes, automobiles (including his convertible Mustang) and dining out with family and friends.
He took great pride in his vast collection of Lionel trains, something that he cherished as a child with his own father. He loved getting together with family and friends for celebrations, especially the infamous Fugazzi, Herring and Kelterborn “FHK” Christmas parties. He looked forward to trips back to New York City to visit his old haunts as well as family, childhood friends, fraternity brothers and to regularly attend high school reunions.
Lastly, he loved everything and anything having to do with the University of Michigan and, of course, the Michigan Wolverine football team. Go Blue! Those who knew him will never forget his unique, opinionated, unfiltered personality, including East Coast banter and fierce loyalty to his family.
To his sons he was known as “The Stallion”. He was certainly a force to be reckoned with! The family would like to thank all the medical personnel who have helped take care of him over the years, including Dr. Ruth Yoon, the staff at Fresenius Kidney Care in East Lansing, the Meridian Township Fire Department and the staff at Sparrow Hospital.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Knights of Columbus at St. Martha Parish. The family will receive friends at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home (1730 E. Grand River Ave. East Lansing) on Friday, July 27th from 4 to 8 pm with a Rosary at 7 pm.
Funeral services will be held at St. Martha Catholic Church (1100 W. Grand River Ave. , Okemos 48864) on Saturday, July 28th at 11 am with the Rev. Michael Murray officiating.
