Duane’s Obituary Duane “Woody” Woodrow Fugate Duane “Woody” Woodrow Fugate of Idleyld Park, Oregon was born March 12, 1940, in Crivitz, Wisconsin to parents Woodrow and Katherine (Johnson) Fugate. He joined the family as the third of nine children. Woody spent his early years in Wisconsin, Indiana and Oakland, Oregon before moving to Klamath, California with his family.
In Klamath, Woody attended the Klamath Union School. It was there that he would meet Joanne “Jody” Cole while in seventh grade. The two began to notice each other, exchanging smiles and looks that eventually turned into courting.
They married on February 8, 1959, in Crescent City, California. They moved to Douglas County in 1962, where they made their home. Together they had four children; Rick, Pam, Mark and Cheryl.
Woody worked in the timber industry most all of his life. He logged with many people, including his brothers and sons. In 1991, he joined the Glide Rural Fire Department as a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician.
Woody enjoyed serving the Glide community in that capacity. He was a highly dedicated volunteer who rarely missed an emergency response call. He served on the equipment committee for the department and was honored as the 2002 Firefighter/EMT of the year.
He retired from the fire department in 2014, but couldn’t keep from visiting the station every once in a while. More importantly to Woody than his professional achievements was his love for his family. Jody was the love of his life.
They spent nearly 65 years together as a couple and he once wrote a note to her that said he would stop loving her “on the 13th of never never never” and he truly meant that. He was profoundly proud of his children and their accomplishments. He taught each of them the value and importance of family.
Later in life as his children began families of their own, Woody enjoyed having the title of “Papa” and “Grandpa”. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were loved dearly and brought him so much joy. One of his favorite pastimes was hunting and fishing, especially on those trips to Dempsey Spring when his family was right there with him.
With family by his side, Woody quietly passed away on Friday, August 24, 2018, after a valiant fight with cancer. From his diagnosis until his last days, Woody maintained a positive attitude, laughed, loved and smiled; teaching all of us another valuable life lesson. The family would like to thank Doctors Jorgenson and Weese along with their staff for the incredible treatment Woody received.
A big thank you to Chantele Bangs and the staff of Chantele’s Loving Touch for the warm environment and devoted care he received the last few weeks of his life. Woody is survived by his wife Joanne “Jody” Fugate; sons Rick (Melinda), Mark (Lynette); daughters Pam O’Dell (Steve), Cheryl Fugate (Scott Giambrone); grandchildren Brad O’Dell (Holly), Kristin Lanham (Jay), Brian O’Dell (Nicole), Ashley Faircloth (Scott), Bryant Fugate (Ashley), Chad Fugate (Ericka), Ryan Fugate (Tonya), Christopher Giambrone (Madison), Tracy Grubbs (Brian), Angie Griffin (Michael), Aaron Mann (Sandra), Lindsey Mann; 20 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild; siblings Dorwin “Doby” (Cindy), Clyde (Gloria), Delbert (Nanette), Daryl (Marsha), Dorinda Grubbs (Mervin), half-sister Darla Vanorman (Clyde); brother-in-law Randy Cole; sister-in-law Christy Conklin (John); numerous beloved nieces and nephews; special cousin Audrey Bush (Larry) and close friend and uncle to Jody, Marlin Cole (Lorenna). He is preceded in death by his father Woodrow; mother Katherine; step-mother Vivian; sister Donna; brothers Doug and Delmar; half-brother Donavon Fugate.
A celebration of life will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 22, 2018, at the Glide Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 19085 N. Umpqua Highway, Glide OR 97443, with family friend, Rev. Mike Miller, officiating.
