Edward “Eddie” Putala, 76, of 54 High St., died Friday, January 18, 2019 at Baystate Franklin Medical Center. Eddie was born in Belchertown, MA on July 28, 1942 the son of Josephine Putala. Chances are if you have traveled in Greenfield, you have seen Eddie in his scooter.

He was always willing to stop and talk to anyone about what was going on around town. He made friends quickly and he looked forward to sharing information on the weather or what was on the news. From the tellers at his bank to the mailman on his route, Eddie had a smile and laugh.

He would listen to his scanner and find out where an incident had taken place and the important details so he could share with the next person he came across. He loved the Christmas season and everything that comes with it. From the decorations, to the toys, to the music, he enjoyed every bit of it and didn’t want the season to end.

He would also remind you every year when his birthday was and how old he was going to be. He was hard working and at one time he was employed at the Friendly’s restaurant on Federal Street. He enjoyed doing odd jobs for friends around town like mowing lawns, raking leaves and picking up branches that had fallen.

Eddie looked forward to the Franklin County Fair each year so he could join the “trash-busters” and maintain the trash containers along the midway. He was a proud member of the Loyal Order of Moose #997 on School St. and often helped with serving dinners and promoting the Club. Eddie was assisted by the United Arc of Franklin County and relied on the staff for outreach and support.

He wasn’t one to complain or speak badly of anyone, he was just a good and gentle man. He was…. .

“Eddie”. There are many people who considered Eddie their friend in one way or another, but his closest friend and someone he considered his family was Kathleen “Cathy” Rowe-Clapp of Greenfield. She was his biggest supporter and someone he could count on no matter what the situation.

A Celebration of Eddie’s Life will take place Saturday, Jan. 26, at 2:00pm at the Smith-Kelleher Funeral Home, 87 Franklin St., Greenfield. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Eddie’s memory may be sent to the United Arc, 294 Ave.
