Obituary for Edward Latta Edward M. Latta, 92, died peacefully at home Sunday, November 25, 2018. He was born Nov. 17, 1926 in Battle Creek, Michigan to Edward E. Latta and Helen (Confer) Latta.

He attended Battle Creek schools and enlisted in the U.S. Army in November, 1944. He was proud to serve in the 127th Regiment, 32nd Infantry Division (Red Arrow). He was stationed in the Philippines and Japan, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant.

He then joined the Army Air Force Reserve and was honorably discharged Jan. 20, 1950. He married Marie Packer June 25, 1949 and they had five children: John Latta, Jean Latta, Cheryl (Ronald) Elkins, all of Battle Creek, Susan (Christopher) Reen of Kalamazoo and Daniel (Michelle) Latta of Olivet.

He had seven grandchildren: Tristen Amey of Battle Creek, Lauren Amey of Augusta, Jason Elkins of Kalamazoo, Cameron Elkins of Ann Arbor, Holly Latta of Hopkinsville, KY, Heather Latta of Dudley, MA, and Garrett Latta of Olivet, two step-grandchildren, Makayla Bennett of Olivet and Lars Bennett of Grand Rapids and two great-grandchildren, Jordan Spiker of Battle Creek and Liberty Pate of Augusta. He was preceded in death by his parents. In 1948 Ed began work as a driver for Norman Foods.

He later became a salesman, then credit manager, reluctantly retiring after sixty-five years when the company closed. He was also employed by the police force, working as constable for Pennfield Township, deputy sheriff for Calhoun County, patrolman in Springfield and Chief of Police in Augusta. Ed enjoyed hunting, fishing and target-shooting and had dozens of trophies attesting to his expertise with handguns.

He was an NRA Certified Instructor in Personal Protection. He loved country music, ballroom dancing and animals, especially his dogs Babe and Joe, and his cat, Katt. His greatest pride, however, was in his family.

He was a faithful husband, loving father and good provider. He started each morning with daily Bible readings and always tried to follow the Golden Rule. He was a former member of the Marshall Moose, Comstock VFW and Burnham Brook Senior Center.
