Edwin C. Dutton, of Waldorf, passed away peacefully at his home on February 19, 2019 at the age of 92. Born March 30, 1926, he was the son of Mary McCloskey Dutton and Notley Thomas Dutton. Predeceased by his brothers, Notley, Willard, and Richard Dutton; sister, Charlotte Gates; daughter, Katherine Racey; son, Edwin C., Jr.; and grandchildren, Stephanie and Sage Stauffer.
He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy; sister, Lorraine Willett; sons, John Bruce, David (Emily), and Michael (Danita) Dutton; daughters, Cynthia (Michael) Gilroy, Debora (Richard) Rivera, Sandra Zanko, Suzanne (Todd) Willett, Constance (Scott) Meharg, and Julie Stauffer; step-children, David Robinson and Cathy (James) Dumais; 18 grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and one step great-grandchild, plus a host of nieces and nephews and fur child, Baby Cat. A life-long resident of Charles County, Mr. Dutton graduated from Sacred Heart School in La Plata in 1943. He attended Strayer College in Washington, DC where he earned a Master’s Degree in Business Administration.
In 1945, he was drafted into the Second Battalion of the US Marine Corps where he traveled to Pearl Harbor, Guam, and Nagasaki, Japan. After an Honorable Discharge, he and his brothers ran the family farm on Billingsley Road as well as running a sawmill. He was also employed by the Robinson and Hass Lumber Supply Company and the Charles County Sanitary Commission, all while building over 100 homes in the county.
He ended his working career as Treasurer of the LaMar and Wallace Millwork Company, retiring at age 74. In addition to enjoying time with his family, he had a great love for baseball – playing and holding the office of President, Secretary and Treasurer in the Charles County Baseball League. He was known for his right-handed curve ball pitch and enjoyed the Washington Senators, Orioles, and Nationals teams as well as the local Blue Crabs.
His other hobbies included gardening, reading, coin collecting, politics, history, sports, and traveling. He also wrote books on his military experiences and his father’s ancestry. A visitation will be held on Friday, March 1, 2019 from 2-4PM and from 6-8PM with prayers officiated by Fr.
Santiago Martin at 7:00PM at Raymond Funeral Service, 5635 Washington Avenue, La Plata, MD 20646. Funeral Services will be on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 11:00AM at Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, 305 East Smallwood Drive, Waldorf, MD with Pastor Laurie Gates-Ward officiating.
