Funk, 101, of Oberlin, OH completed her journey to Heaven on Friday, January 4, 2019. She was born October 28, 1917 in Derby, Kansas to William and Mabel Buck. While teaching Home Economics at Highland Park School in Topeka, Eilene met her future husband, Clarence “Bud” Funk at a USO Dance in Topeka.

Bud was stationed in Topeka for Army Air Corp Flight Training. Just a few short weeks after meeting Bud, he asked Eilene to marry him when he returned from the War. While Bud was at the War, Eilene continued to teach at Highland Park School.

Bud and Eilene were married in 1944 when Bud returned. And, in 1954 they were blessed with their only son, Larry Funk. In the late sixties through the mid-seventies, she worked as a Library Assistant at Mudd Library at Oberlin College, retiring in 1976.

Eilene and Bud enjoyed gardening for many years at the Funk Homestead in Birmingham, OH. In addition, Eilene enjoyed sewing, needlepoint, quilling, and other craft projects. A short time after Bud passed away 1996, Eilene went to live with her brother-in-law, Floyd Holmes in Grove, OK after her sister, Carol passed away.

They spent the next eleven years traveling the country spending the winters in Texas and summers in Colorado. In 2011, Eilene moved back to Ohio to be closer to family and resided at The Abbewood Senior Living Community in Elyria, OH. She is survived by her son and wife, Larry Funk and Shirley Hull; niece, Dee Ann Naylor Kornfeld; great nephew and wife, Andrew Kornfeld and Amy Loftus and brother-in-law, Floyd Holmes.

She was preceeded in death by her husband, Clarence “Bud” Funk; parents, William and Mabel (Schaper) Buck; sisters, Carol (Buck) Holmes and Margaret (Buck) Naylor, and a brother, Wallace Buck. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to The Abbewood, 1210 South Abbe Road, Elyria, OH 44035 towards the Greenhouse Project in Eilene Funk’s name. An informal Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, January 24, 2019 from 6-8PM at The Abbewood, 1210 South Abbe Road, Elyria, OH A private burial will be scheduled in the spring.
