Eleanor’s Obituary Eleanor R. “Boat” York September 10, 1938- March 4, 2019 Eleanor York died peacefully after a long Illness, surrounded by family on March 4th. She was the wife of 48 years of John W. York. Known as “Boat” her entire life, she lived life to its fullest.

She was born and raised in Philadelphia, daughter of Shirley Putnam and Edgar F. Rulon-Miller. Her father died when she was 4 years old, and her mother married John Grange. She attended the Agnes Irwin School in Villanova, PA and the former Abbott Academy in North Andover, MA.

She briefly attended Northwestern University in Chicago, before returning to Philadelphia. Boat married John W. York in July 11, 1959. Boat and John were associated with the Philadelphia Zoo for many years, he as the Chairman of the Board, she as the President of the Docent Council.

She traveled the world with the zoo, to many places in Africa as well as the Galapagos. In the spring of 1981, after John’s retirement, they relocated to Prouts Neck, Maine, following their kids who were both in school in Maine. While in Maine, Boat worked to keep herself busy but slowed down for a while when she had a health scare, but continued to volunteer after recovery.

She was diagnosed with lung cancer in the late 2010 and beat it! She was predeceased by John in 2007 and her half-sister Shirley Grange in March of 2018. Boat is survived by her daughter Eleanor Tricarico and her husband, Al, of Willow Grove, Pa.

, son John, Jr of South Portland, ME; grandchildren: Kate and Zack Ritchie and their daughter, Eleanor; Emily and Josiah Reiner and their children Corban, Sabrina, and Jolianne, all of Williamsport, Pa; Maria Tricarico and Michael Bova of Syracuse, NY; James Tricarico of Williamsport, Pa. ; and Joshua Tricarico of Willow Grove, Pa; and two nieces, Alexandra Bailey of Boston, Charlemagne Watson of NYC, and brother-in-law, George Watson of Falmouth. A memorial service will be held at a future date.
