Eleanor’s Obituary Eleanor S. Dixon, 85, a life-long New Britain resident, passed away on March 19th after a short illness. Eleanor was born in 1933, the daughter of the late William and Joan (Johnson) Strohecker. As a young woman, she met the love of her life, Edward J. Dixon.

She married him in October 1953, embarking on a 63-year romantic journey, that ended only when he proceeded her in death, in 2017. After graduating from New Britain High School in 1951, Eleanor began a 49-year career at the New Britain Public Library. Eleanor loved the library!

She worked for many years at the East Street and Chamberlain Branches, where she shaped the minds of hundreds of young school children through the joy of reading. The New Britain Institute recognized her exemplary service, designating her as the 1994 employee of the year. In retirement, she was active with the Stanley Seniors, traveling with her husband on numerous trips, outings and activities.

She enjoyed the company of her grandchildren both in the local area and in many diverse locals across the United States associated with her oldest son’s Air Force assignments. Eleanor was an avid bowler, bowling well into her 70s in multiple ten pin leagues and earning multiple awards. Her most lasting contribution was being a beloved mother to her four sons; Colonel (Retired) Edward T. Dixon, USAF and his wife Elise of Williamsburg, Virginia, Kenneth A. Dixon and his wife April Bowman of Bristol, Connecticut, Michael W. Dixon and his wife Rachel of Berlin, Connecticut and David J. Dixon of New Britain.

Eleanor’s life was enriched by five beloved grandchildren; Eddie, Nicole, William, Ashley and Troy. Also cherishing her memory are her sister, Adele Little of Glastonbury, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and friends in the greater New Britain area. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, March 26th from 5-7 PM at the Erickson-Hansen funeral home 411 South Main Street, New Britain.

A celebration of life ceremony will take place at Erickson-Hansen at 10 AM on March 27th before proceeding to Fairview Cemetery for interment. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Eleanor’s name to the New Britain Public Library, 20 High Street, New Britain, CT 06051. The family would also like to thank Susan and Bernice for the quality home care they provided Eleanor.
