Eleanor Welch Shapiro, 98, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2019. She was born February 13, 1920 in Boston Massachusetts. Mrs. Shapiro proudly served our country in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

She enlisted in 1942 and was a member of the First Class of Navy Waves. After her Honorable Discharge in 1953, she and her husband, Harry Maurice Shapiro, also in the U.S. Navy, decided to make Jacksonville, Florida their home. She was a true patriot and a member of the Greatest Generation.

She was a life time member of the American Legion Post 129 and the WAVES National. She was also a parishioner of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Jacksonville Beach. She retired from the Internal Revenue Service in 1982.

She was an accomplished artist and in her spare time could be found painting at her easel. Mrs. Shapiro is survived by her daughter Laura Shapiro Torrey Kettell and her son in law, Leedom Kettell. The family would like to express their thanks and deep appreciation to the Palms of Ponte Vedra for their wonderful and loving care.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:30am, Thursday, January 31, 2019 in the Chapel of Quinn- Shalz Funeral Home, 3600 3rd. St. S., Jacksonville Beach, FL, with the Reverend William Kelly officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 224 N. 5th St., Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250.
