Mrs. Elenore T. (Bednar) Sprague, 86, a resident of Valley View Terrace, High Street, Wilkes-Barre, fell asleep in the Lord Thursday afternoon at her residence following a lingering illness. Born on August 29, 1932, in Wilkes-Barre, Mrs. Sprague was a daughter to the late Andrew and Mary (Homza) Bednar. Educated in the city schools, she was a graduate of the James M. Coughlin High School, Wilkes-Barre.

Until her retirement, she and her husband formerly worked for the area’s local garment industry. She was employed as a seamstress and floor lady for several companies in the Wyoming Valley. Mrs. Sprague was a member of Holy Assumption of Saint Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, North Wilkes-Barre, where she was previously active in parish affairs.

Following her husband’s passing, she was associated with the Carmelite Sisters and joined them on a mission trip to Portugal. In her spare time, Elenore was a wonderfully gifted poet of whom had several works copyrighted and transcribed into music through the American Poetry Association. Mrs. Sprague is remembered by those who knew and loved her as being a loving devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother to her adoring family.

Her most admirable quality was her giving spirit. She would give of herself, her time, talents and treasure and only asked for a smile or a prayer in return. She will be greatly missed by all those she touched in this life.

Mrs. Sprague was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Mr. Howard L. Sprague Sr. on February 2, 1995. At the time of his passing, the couple shared forty-two years of married life together. She was also preceded by a son, Mr. Howard Sprague Jr. and by a brother and sisters including Mary Rekito, Anne Oliver and Andrew Bednar.

Left to mourn her passing and cherish her memory are her children, Milton Sprague and his wife Ellen of West Wyoming; Suzanne Palmer and her husband Richard of East Lemon; Lawrence “Larry” Sprague and his wife Donna of Sweet Valley; Louis Sprague and his wife Theresa of Harrisburg; Richard C. Sprague and his wife Valerie of Georgia; Paula Artmont, at home; Andrew C. “Andy” Sprague and his wife Linda of Shickshinny; George Sprague and his wife Patricia of Shavertown; Bruce Sprague and his wife Deborah of Florida; Daughter-in-law, Sonja “Marion” Sprague of Shickshinny; Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; Several brothers, sisters including Catherine Anderson, Irene Hurray, Michael Bednar, Marge Wipple, Paul Bednar and Sophie Bednar; Numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and dear friends. Elenore’s family would like to gratefully acknowledge the care and compassion shown her by the visiting staff of Heartland Hospice in her final days. Funeral services with Panachida for Mrs. Sprague will be conducted on Monday at 10:30 a.m. from the North Wilkes-Barre location of the John V. Morris Family Funeral Homes Inc., 625 North Main Street, followed by the Office of Christian Burial in Holy Assumption of Saint Mary Byzantine Catholic Church, 695 North Main Street.

The Reverend Michael Kerestes, pastor, will serve as celebrant and homilist. Interment with the Rite of Committal will follow next to her husband in the parish cemetery, Lake Street, Dallas. Relatives and friends may join the Sprague family for visitation and remembrances Monday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at the funeral home.
