Obituary for Elizabeth “Betty” Ruth Myers Elizabeth “Betty” Ruth Myers born December 18, 1929 passed quietly in her rest on May 6, 2017 in her home with sons Stephen holding her right hand and Jeffrey holding her left hand. She was 88-years-old. Graveside Service: 11 am Friday, May 11, 2018 at Skyvue Memorial Gardens.
Betty was born to Millard and Dorothy Jumper in Tucumcari, New Mexico. She grew up there, in Albuquerque and Dallas, Texas. She attended Sunset High School, Texas Women’s University and SMU.
She met Jimmie Dee Myers in 1951 and married in 1952. They made their homes in Dallas and El Paso in the early 1950s, Houston in the early 1960s, San Diego, California in the mid to late 1960s, and returned to El Paso in 1972 for nearly 30 years. They relocated to Arlington in late 2001.
She worked in a bank and an attorney’s office before her true calling as a teacher in the 1950s with Technical and Austin high schools in El Paso. Betty was also a mother who brought two sons into the world in 1959 and 1963 to raise them. She later returned to teaching in 1975 at MacArthur School in El Paso for twenty years and retired in 1995.
A gifted woman remembered best as a teacher, she also participated in the El Paso Women’s Club, and supported her retail and artist husband with gallery and art showings in California and Texas, Club Barrera Taurina, and in Dog Rescues. Betty also served her husband as a primary care giver through his end of life fight with Myasthenia-gravis from 1997 to 2007. She was a grandmother who loved life, attending her church, enjoyed her home, garden, and time with family and friends.
She lived long enough to see a sonogram of her great-granddaughter the child of her eldest grandson James and Melanie days prior to passing from cancer. Betty lived a long and wonderful life. We commend and appreciate Rush Creek Christian Church/Chris Wilson Arlington, Encompass Hospice of Fort Worth Texas, Dr. Christina Aseron, her nurse Angie, and Methodist Mansfield on their excellent care and professionalism in our times of need.
