Passed away on Saturday, February 23, in Grand Rapids, MI. Ellen was born and raised in Grand Rapids, where she lived her entire life. She graduated from Creston High School at the top of her class and continued her education at Kalamazoo College, where she met her husband of 68 years, Don.

Ellen had an unbelievable gift for numbers and worked as a bookkeeper for her husband’s company as well as others. There was nothing she liked better than balancing a checkbook. She could knit anything, with or without a pattern and helped many with their projects.

She enjoyed smelling her roses in the garden. Lake Michigan held a very special spot in her heart. She spent many hours in the sand and sun with family and friends.

There was never a cat or kitten that she could resist. If she could have, she would have had a house full. Ellen is survived by her loving husband Donald G. Hassberger, son Kurt (Madelon) Hassberger, daughter Elizabeth (Earl) Clements, granddaughter Rebecca (Scott) Bird, grandson Eric (Andrea) Hassberger, granddaughter Kelly (Charlie) Peterson, grandson Robert Clements and three great grandchildren, Mya and Weston Bird, and Isla Hassberger.

Ellen was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Rachel Alberda and her brother Tom Alberda. In remembrance of a loving wife, grandmother and great grandmother, donations can be made to the Humane Society of West Michigan. This would give Ellen great joy.

Donations may be made to: Humane Society of West Michigan 3077 Wilson Dr. N.W., Grand Rapids MI 49534 Tel: 1-616-453-8900 Web: www.
