OBITUARY Elsie E. Fulks May 10, 1919 – July 20, 2018 Niantic- Elsie E. (Hayes) Fulks, 99, of Niantic went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 20, 2018. Elsie was born on May 10, 1919, the daughter of Stephen and Bertha (Glossenger) Hayes, and was raised in Waterford and New London. Her family lived for many years on Morgan St. in New London, and Elsie and her sister, Burnett, loved to remember the time spent there and their many neighbors, including the Grishams, the Raffertys, and the Einhorns.

While she was young, Elsie delivered The Day newspaper for many years to help support her family. She graduated from Williams Memorial Institute in 1937. She loved to ice skate, and in her WMI yearbook, she was noted for aspiring to be the Sonja Henie of her class.

During World War II, Elsie was a “Rosie the Riveter,” working as a machinist on induction valves of submarines at Electric Boat in Groton. It was there that she met her husband, Wesley H. Fulks. She and Wes raised their family near Jordan Cove in Waterford, and then, beginning in 1969, near Gorton Pond in Niantic.

Elsie spent the rest of her life in Niantic, moving to the AHEPA apartments on Roxbury Rd. , and eventually to Bride Brook Health and Rehabilitation Center. Elsie enjoyed shopping for clothes, reading magazines, cutting out recipes, knitting, going to the local beaches, and especially spending time with her family.

Her granddaughter, Lauren Beth, was the apple of her eye. Family Pizza and Dairy Queen in Niantic were two of her favorite places. She was a great fan of UConn women’s basketball and the Red Sox.

She was a member of Flanders Baptist and Community Church and Nehantic Chapter of Eastern Star. For many years, she and her husband faithfully visited their mentally disabled son in Northampton, and then Sandisfield, MA every two weeks. She was also a dedicated volunteer at the Masonic Home in Wallingford.

Elsie was predeceased by her husband, Wesley H. Fulks, son, Gary S. Fulks, brothers, Lawrence Hayes and Henry Hayes, and sisters, Thelma Hayes, Jessie Rowley, and Marjorie Elton. She will be sadly missed by her daughter, Sharon Meinz and husband, Michael of East Lyme, her daughter, Pamela Meitzler and her husband, Richard of Sandown, NH, her granddaughter, Lauren Sager and her husband, Nathaniel of Newburyport, MA, an especially dear sister, Burnett Hirt of Broomall, PA, and many nieces and nephews and their families. Relatives and friends can honor and celebrate Elsie’s life by gathering at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 13 Lake Ave.

, Niantic from 7:00 until 8:30pm on Wednesday, July 25th. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, July 26th at 11:00am in Flander’s Baptist and Community Church. Interment will follow in Jordan Cemetery, Waterford.

The family would like to thank Cathy Wilson of the East Lyme Senior Center, Pastor Alan Scott of Flanders Baptist and Community Church for his regular visits, and the members of the church for their kindnesses. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the East Lyme Senior Center or Flanders Baptist and Community Church.
