Elton Joe Oetken Jr. May 20, 1931 – May 23, 2019 Share this obituary Upload Photo| View/Sign Guest Book| Send Private Condolences Elton Joe Oetken Jr., 88, died peacefully, Thursday, May 23, 2019 at Eden Hill Communities in New Braunfels, Texas surrounded by his family. He leaves three children, his daughter Paula DiFonzo and her husband Bob, his sons Greg Oetken and Kim, and Tim Oetken and Kathy, and his sister Elvera Kneuper Zengler. He also leaves ten grandchildren: Buddy, Michael, D.J., Erin, Tanya, Samantha, Kori, Kelsey, Jason, and Monica; and 18 great-grandchildren with 3 more on the way.

He is preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Patricia Goertz Oetken, and his son, David Thomas Oetken. Born and raised the son of Elton Joe and Lownie (Jaloway) Oetken, he was a lifelong resident of New Braunfels. EJ graduated in the Class of 1949 from New Braunfels High School.

He worked briefly at JC Penny and Randolph Air Force Base, before starting his career job at the Texas Department of Transportation for 35 years. Under his mentor and boss, Raymond Stotzer, he used his high school education to learn the complexity of designing and building highways. He took pride in the designs and construction of State Hwy 46, FM 306, and Loop 337.

EJ served 14 proud years in the Texas National Guard achieving the rank of First Sergeant. EJ was a 3rd DEGREE life member of Knights of Columbus and lifetime member of Mission Valley Bowling Club. He had a passion for bowling that began in his youth where he started setting nine and ten pin games at the New Braunfels Social Club now the Elks Club.

He continued bowling until he was in his eighties. Nothing gave him greater joy than to spend any and every opportunity to be fishing with his sons and his lifetime friend Hanno Pape. While he always loved animals and allowed his children to bring home multiple strays over the years, his true love for the faithful companion began in his retirement.

He always had one and once up to five dogs faithfully following him around his seven acres as he loved and cared for his home. His black lab, Mollie, gave him devotion and company for fourteen years until her death in March 2019. He was a great dad, teaching his children baseball, and he worked with his sons avidly in the FFA raising championship hogs.

A visitation will be held at Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in New Braunfels on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 from 5:00-8:00 PM with a Rosary at 6 PM. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in New Braunfels.

Burial will follow in procession to Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery #1.
