Eugene “Gene” Edward Wolbert, 77, of Newport, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2019, at his home. His memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2019, at Munden Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Freddie Braswell.

Inurnment, with military honors, will follow at Gethsemane Memorial Park. Gene was a Vietnam Veteran who grew up in Warren, Ohio, the oldest of five children and graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1960. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps, where he worked his entire career in the aviation radar field, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant in 1975, before he transitioned to Chief Warrant Officer that same year.

Gene spent almost six more years in the aviation radar/electronics maintenance field before retiring from the Marine Corps, as a First Lieutenant, in 1980. The discipline and patriotism Gene learned in the Marines never left him, as family and friends will attest; Gene devoted over 58 years of his life to federal service. After retiring from the Marine Corps, he worked for ITT/Gilfillan as a government contractor, in the radar maintenance field.

Gene also obtained his bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University in 1983. In the early 1990s, he transitioned to civil service at Fleet Readiness Center East, MCAS Cherry Point, working several different aviation programs (F-4, V-22, RQ-21, etc), before retiring in November 2018. When he wasn’t working, Gene was passionate about car restoration and spending time with his grandchildren.

Gene is survived by his daughter, MaryBeth Wolbert Lanto and husband Brad of Emerald Isle; son, Robert Eugene Scoville Wolbert and wife Tammy of Winterville, NC; sister, Patricia Jessup and husband Gary of Warren, OH; brothers, Charles Wolbert, John Wolbert, and Timothy Wolbert all of Warren, OH; and grandchildren, Lauren Bright, Zac Lanto, Ryan Wolbert, Drew Wolbert, and Savannah Lanto. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn “Sue” Wolbert; parents, Eugene S. Wolbert and Roseanne Gallichio; and daughter, Christine Wolbert Bright. Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Friday, May 31, 2019, at Munden Funeral Home.
