Evanna Marie Hodges December 24, 1948 – January 09, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Evanna was born Evanna Marie Jackson on December 24, 1948 in Brusly, Louisiana to the late Ferman Jackson, Sr., and Evanna Scott Jackson. She made her transition to Heaven on Wednesday, January 9, 2019. To close family she was “Evanna Marie”, to friends she was “Marie”, to her children she was “Mom”, to her grandchildren she was “Grandma” and to our Heavenly Father she was and is “faithful daughter and servant”.
Evanna attended Brusly High School and was one of the first blacks to desegregate the school. She graduated from there and went on to attend Southern University in Baton Rouge, La. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Education there.
She then moved to California where she got her first teaching position with Stockton Unified School District’s Webster Junior High. She taught Math, Physical Education (PE) and Science at Webster for close to 30 years. She was well respected by her colleagues, students and staff throughout the district.
Later in her career as an educator she went back to school and obtained her Master’s degree from National University and taught at Stagg High School where she served as a mentor teacher and also as a vice principal. Evanna’s passion for education ran very deep and she was a strong advocate of education. She was very active in the Stockton community as she was a member of the Black Professional Women’s Organization in which she thoroughly enjoyed and was also on the board which founded Progressive Missionary Baptist Church.
In Houston, she was a proud member of the Red Hatter’s Women’s Club. In Evanna’s spare time she loved to play golf, loved to do arts n crafts with her grandchildren, and loved to sing. Some referred to her affectionately as beautiful “songbird”.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children: Ericka Hodges, Eric (Marshawndria) Hodges and Erin Hodges. Her six grandchildren: Travis, Jazzmin, Jaden, Eric, Amari and Alijah, and also one on the way Aaliyah. Brother, Earl (Lois) Jackson, Sr., Kenneth (Rose) Jackson and Ronald (Loria) Jackson.
Sisters, Ola Mae Jackson Ambeau and Connie Jackson Davis. Close nephews, Elliott Allen and Darrel Ambeau, godchild, Emma Elmore Joubert and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends who will greatly, greatly miss her. Preceded in death by her parents Ferman Jackson, Sr. and Evanna Scott Jackson, brothers, Ferman Jackson, Jr., Alton Jackson and Sherman Jackson, and sister, Delores Jackson Allen.
