Obituary for Florence H. Flanders Florence Haywood Flanders On September 26, 2018, Florence Haywood Flanders passed away after complications of heart disease and cancer. Florence was born on September 13, 1925 in San Antonio, Texas and graduated from Brackenridge High School in 1943. After graduating from high school, she was a volunteer for the American Red Cross until the end of WWII in 1945.
Florence married Raymond Mont Flanders on September 12th, 1953, also in San Antonio. Together they went on to have two sons and lived in and around the San Antonio area for the next 36 years until Ray’s death in December of 1989. Florence continued to work and live in San Antonio on her own until 2005 when she moved in with her sister Cora Mayer.
Florence helped to support her family and then herself by working clerical positions at various offices in San Antonio and also at SW Texas Methodist Hospital. Her last paid job was with Northside Independent School District in several secretarial positions at Pease Middle School and also Clark High School from 1974 until 2003. She retired from NISD and took with her many interesting and joyous memories of working in the schools with her co-workers, teachers and especially of the numerous children she had helped and served along the way.
Florence and husband Ray also lived on a ranch on the western side of San Antonio at the Medina and Bexar County line raising her two sons, ranch and farm animals and any other animal that happened to come to them while Ray managed the then Stevens Ranch as it was called, owned by E. M. Stevens. Though there were numerous fond memories living life on the ranch, there were also memories that were not so fond, like trying to cook wild game for human consumption, which did not come out as good as everyone assured her it would. One of her favorite phrases she repeated several times to her family was “this city girl is not doing that”.
Florence was beloved by many family members and friends and will be missed. She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Mont Flanders, son Jeffery E. Flanders, parents John Springer and Nelda S. Haywood and brother John R. Haywood. She leaves behind her son James “Jim” Flanders (Lynette), sisters Mary Gable and Cora Mayer, six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
