Obituary for Fr. Henry Madigan OFM Conv. + Fr.

Henry Madigan, OFM Conv. was born in Schenectady, NY on March 4, 1930 and passed away on December 10, 2018. He was the son of the late Henry and Mary (Guiltinen) Madigan.

In addition to his Franciscan family, he leaves his niece Mary Lou Stanley. Fr. Henry entered the Franciscan Friars Conventual Novitiate in Cohoes, NY, on August 22, 1949.

He professed his Temporary Vows on August 27, 1950 and his Solemn Vows on August 28, 1953. Father Henry was ordained to the priesthood in the Immaculate Conception Cathedral, Albany, NY, on May 26, 1956. He received an S.T.B. and an S.T.L. from the Université de Montreal as well as an M.S.S. from Bryn Mawr College.

His first assignment after his ordination and studies was at St. Anthony-on-Hudson Seminary, in Rensselaer, NY where he taught Theology for six years (1957-1963). Fr. Henry served on the Mission Band (1963-1966) while living at St. Catharine Friary, in Seaside, NJ.

In the following years, he worked in pastoral ministry at Sts. Peter & Paul Parish and St. Bartholomew Church, in Camden, NJ. Fr.

Henry returned to St. Anthony-on-Hudson in 1974, to serve as Director of Brothers for two years until in 1977, he became the Director of the Pre-Novitiate San Damiano Friary, in Holyoke, MA, while teaching Ethics at Saint Hyacinth College and Seminary in Granby, MA, until his return to pastoral ministry in 1982. Fr. Henry was assigned as Guardian of the friary while serving as Pastor of Saint Peter Catholic Church in Point Pleasant Beach (1982-1988).

In the ensuing years, Fr. Henry resided in St. Bonaventure Friary, Washington, DC and then onto the Franciscan Mission House, in Rensselaer, NY. In 2005 Friar Henry served as the Assistant Novice Director at St. Francis Friary, Mishawaka, IN, until 2008, when in semi-retirement he moved to the Immaculate Conception Friary, in Rensselaer, NY.

There, he continued to minister sacramentally for as long as he was able. In 2016, Fr. Henry was transferred to Our Lady of the Angels Care Center, in Enfield, CT where he met Sister Death on December 10, 2018.

Fr. Henry will lie in state Our Lady of the Angels Chapel, 1315 Enfield St., Enfield, CT 06082, from 6-7:00 P.M. on December 12, 2018, with a Franciscan Wake Service at 7 P.M. On Thursday, December 13, 2018, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Chapel at 11:00 A.M., with a viewing from 10 -10:45 A.M. Interment will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Chicopee, MA, in the Franciscan Friar’s plot. Memorial Donations may be made to the Franciscan Education Burse, 12300 Folly Quarter Road, Ellicott City, MD 21042.
