Obituary for Frank Edward Tracy III Frank Tracy, 95, died peacefully in his home on Sunday, March 25, 2018. His beloved wife of 21 years, Bobbie Shumaker Tracy, was by his side. Born in Boston, MA on October 12, 1922 to Frank Tracy II and Susan Quinn Tracy.
He attended public schools in MA and CT and The Norfolk Division of the College of William & Mary/ Virginia Polytechnic Institute ( now Old Dominion University ). Corporal Tracy served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II, participating in the initial combat landings on the islands of Bougainville, Solomon Islands where his battalion was awarded a Presidential Unit Citation and, Guam, Mariana Islands where he was wounded by Japanese hand grenade fire. He also served in American Samoa, British Samoa, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Guadalcanal and at the U.S. Naval Mine Depot, Yorktown, VA.
Frank retired from the Virginia Dept of Transportation (VDOT) after 40 years of service and, was the first Division Administrator for the Information Systems Division of VDOT; Former President of the Highway Engineering Exchange Program (1983); Recipient of the AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) Presidents Special Award of Merit (1986); the Hubert A Henry award (1988) and, the Kenneth G. Close award (1988). He was a long time volunteer driver for the American Cancer Society, served as a volunteer member of the Salvation Army Disaster Relief Team and was member of Derbyshire Baptist Church. Frank was step-father to six daughters; three with Bobbie Shumaker Tracy and three with deceased wife, Francis Shepherd Tracy.
Survivors include his wife, Bobbie, and step-daughters: Mrs. Jane Bailey Blythe of Matthews, NC; and Mrs. Beth Bailey Dubis of Jackson, TN; Mrs. Susan Shepherd Dickey of Beaufort, SC; Mrs. Kathleen Shepherd-Dent of Columbia, SC; Mrs. Sherwood Shepherd Holpe of Welwyn Garden City, United Kingdom; Sisters: Mrs. Anne Tracy Dobrich, Mrs. Carol Tracy Payne and Mrs. Janet Tracy Anderson, 6 step-grandchildren and 6 step-great grandchildren. Our deepest thanks for the support of Aldersgate-At-Home Director, Terry Barringer, and the devoted CNA staff and, to Hospice and Palliative Care of Charlotte Region. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to your local Salvation Army, one of Frank’s favorite charities.
A celebration of his life will be held on April 13th at 1:30pm in the Fellowship Hall at Aldersgate, UMCCRC located at 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215 with Chaplin Karen Moore and Reverend Larry Blythe officiating. Reception with the family immediately following. Private interment will be held at a later date at Matthews Historic Cemetery.
