Fred Alston March 25, 1926 – December 13, 2018 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences Fred Alston was born in Sumter County, South Carolina on March 25, 1926 to the late Ed and Laurine Singleton Alston. He was one of thirteen children. He attended school in South Carolina and later moved to New York where he met and married his wife, Bernice Reynolds on August 2, 1956.

During their 62 years of marriage, Fred and Bernice had three children. Fred was employed in the moving storage business with “Allied Liberty Warehouse” where he was a member of Teamsters Local 814. After 33 years of service he retired and started to enjoy a new phase of his life.

His friends and neighbors in the Wagner Houses kept him happy during his retirement days. While always exhibiting an upbeat spirit, Fred loved his family. His grandchildren always held a very special place in his heart, they had him twisted around their little fingers and could ask for anything.

He always welcomed you into his home and asked if you wanted to have something to eat. Then of course the inevitable question “or have a drink of liquor”? In late 2013, Fred was diagnosed with Dementia.

The disease eventually took its toll and he was admitted to the Dewitt Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on East 79th Street in March of 2014, where he spent his final days. Fred is survived by: his beloved wife of 62 years, Bernice Alston; his sons, Fred Alston, East Elmhurst, NY and Ed Alston (Cheryl), Bronx, NY; daughter, Bernice Alston of New York City; stepdaughter, Pearl Reynolds of New Rochelle, NY; stepson, Larry Reynolds (Emily) of Hardeeville, SC; his sister, Isabella Green of Bridgeport, CT; fourteen grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, neighbors and friends. A special thank you goes out to the many caretakers at the Dewitt Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, currently named The Upper East Side Rehabilitation and Nursing Center.
