Mr. Gary Allen Powell, 53, a resident of Glen Lyon, passed into eternal rest surrounded by his loving family in the Post Acute Medical Specialty Hospital at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital Thursday afternoon following a lingering illness. Born in Wilkes-Barre on January 5, 1965, he was a son to the late Robert J. Powell Jr. and Joyce (Donavan) Powell. He was raised in Ashley and attended the Hanover Area Jr./Sr.
High School, Hanover Township. Following his education, Gary began his career as a journeyman for W.D.G. Enterprises, Inc He was later employed by Kahler and Tretter Construction and then Malishchak Brothers.
He held membership in the Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA), local chapter #645. He and his wife, the former Robin Schaffer recently celebrated thirty-three years of married life together on July 20th of this year. Gary is remembered by those who knew and loved him for his love of cars and trucks, especially his monster trucks that he built.
Always willing to lend a helping hand fixing cars, he taught all three of his daughters how to change the oil, fix a flat tire, pull and engine and rebuild a “tranny”. He also enjoyed the great outdoors, being an avid fisherman, hunter or driving his quad through the woods. He was a devoted husband, father, brother and Pop Pop.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his oldest brother, Robert Powell III. Left to mourn his passing, besides his wife Robin at home are the couple’s daughters, Kimberly Powell and her fiancee Stanley “Chip” O’Brien of Moscow; Valerie Shoemaker and her husband Miles of Glen Lyon; Gariann Powell, at home; Brothers, Kenneth Powell and his wife Jackie of Glen Lyon; Thomas Powell of Ashley; Sister, Anita Powell McGeer of Ashley; His beloved grandchildren including Allen Jason (AJ) Shoemaker, David, Victoria and Lilly O’Brien; Goddaughters, Tina Powell and Melanie Tesar; Numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Funeral services for Mr. Powell will be conducted Friday evening from the North Wilkes-Barre location of the John V. Morris Family Funeral Homes Inc., 625 North Main Street.
The Reverend Thomas Morris, retired Methodist and United Church of Christ pastor will serve as celebrant. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the Powell Family. Relatives and friends may join Mrs. Powell and her family for visitation and remembrances Friday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
