Obituary for Gary Guten Guten, Dr. Gary Neal Born 11/8/1939 Died 9/13/2018. Son of Dr. Paul W. and Ann Guten. Husband of Judy Segall Guten.

Father to Paul (Jessica) Guten and Linda Guten-Gale. Pops to Shiloh, Miles, Bastian, Oliver, and Wesley. Brother to Dr. Sharon Guten, Cookie Fielkow, and Dr. Errol (Elizabeth) Segall.

Survived by many loving nieces and nephews Gary was an orthopedic surgeon who specialized in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic surgery. He was the founder of the Sports Medicine Orthopedic Center of Milwaukee and the Medical Director of the Sports Medicine Performance Center of Covenant Rehabilitation of Milwaukee. Gary was a graduate of Washington High School in 1957.

He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1964. From there Gary did his Residence Training at Marquette Medical School from 1965-1969 and got his Master’s Degree, MS Surgery, from Marquette University where he did his thesis on Experimental Degenerative Arthritis. In 2005 Gary also got a Master’s Degree in Bioethics where his thesis was on Placebo Surgery.

He was the team doctor for the Milwaukee Brewers, Milwaukee Wave, and Milwaukee Ballet. Gary was a member of Congregation Emanu-El B’ne Jeshurun.

He supported the Jewish War Veterans in honor of his father’s service and of their work with veterans. He was also a lifelong supporter of the Jewish Community Center and their work with people of all ages in the areas of health and wellness. Gary’s passion for sports, wellness, and nutrition translated into authoring eight books from topics about sports injuries, longevity, Parkinson’s Disease, and the importance of listening to one’s body when it comes to sports and avoiding and treating injuries.

Gary always practiced what he preached; he enjoyed golfing, playing the piano, ping pong, chess, biking, running recreationally and in at least a dozen marathons…anything that would stimulate his mind and body. Yet what people loved the most about Gary were his corny jokes, big heart, and love for learning and enriching his life and the lives of others. He touched and influenced many lives, and he will be greatly missed by all.
