Gary’s Obituary Gary Nile Sneed, age 79, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 26, 2019. Gary was born on January 22, 1940 in Dublin, Texas and grew up in Olney, Texas as the only child of his loving parents, Robert and Cecile Sneed. His favorite childhood pastime was spending time on his grandparents’ farm, raising cows and growing watermelons.

Gary obtained his Bachelor and Masters of Education from the University of North Texas and spent seven years teaching in Burkburnet, Port Lavaca and Abilene followed by 26 years as an Elementary School Principal in Olney and Cedar Hill. Cherished by his teachers and staff, Gary believed that each member of his school played a part in shaping his students who were his delight and the passion of his work. After enjoying a 33-year career in education, he retired from Cedar Hill ISD in 1991.

In 1960, he met his dream girl at the University of North Texas. After many dates to the movies and going out to get hot chocolate, Gary and Lavon were married on December 22, 1962. Beginning a family four years later, they created a beautiful life together over 56 years with their children and grandchildren.

Gary was devoted to his family, showing them his deep love through his steadfast care. He always made everyone leave the house for school or doctor’s appointments half an hour before you really needed to leave. He made sure everyone’s gas tank was never less than three quarters full, and he would have the oil changed in all cars, three months on the spot.

He was our human calendar and made sure to always remind us of everything that was ahead. His family felt secure in his care knowing that he was their keeper. Gary has been described as kind, steady and sweet by those who knew him as well as the master of corny jokes that got both laughs and eye rolls.

He was thoughtful and slow to answer any question, making sure he knew how he felt and how to deliver his answer. He enjoyed reading, taking family vacations and eating Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream. His faith was strong and consistent, and he led his family to trust in the plans of the Lord.

Gary is lovingly remembered by his wife, Marjorie Lavon Sneed of Garland, Texas; his children Marla Gaye Gibson and her husband Judd Gibson of Parker, Texas and Gary Nile Sneed Jr. of Allen, Texas; his grandchildren, Alexis Tyler and her husband Joel Tyler, Cheyanne Gibson and Courtney Gibson. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends and all who knew him. As our dad and pappaw would always say in response to our I love you, “I do you too”.

A viewing will be held on Friday, March 1 from 5 – 7 p.m. at Williams Funeral Directors, Bluebonnet Hall at 1600 South Garland Avenue, Garland, Texas 75040. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 2 at 1 p.m. at New World United Methodist Church at 5134 Northwest Highway, Garland, Texas 75043.
