Obituary for Gene H. Smith Sr Mr. Gene H. Smith, Sr., passed away Sunday, April 15, 2018, in Muskegon. He was born on June 4, 1927 to Matthew and Stella Smith and was a lifelong member of Christian Reformed Church.

Gene and Don Porter were owners of Port City Tire in Muskegon Heights from 1960 to 1974. He sold his half of the business and retired a year. Then in 1975, he started another business, Smith Tire Company on Broadway in Muskegon Heights.

He retired in 1989 and his son, Matthew, bought the business. On October 28, 1948, he married Francis Marie Schaalma in Muskegon. They have three children, Margaret (Richard) Harley, Matthew (Diana) Smith and Gene H. (Lisa) Smith, Jr

They have five grandchildren, Kenneth (Kathryn) Patterson, Keith (Tara) Patterson, Michael (Theresa) Smith, Diana Beckley and Richard A. Harley II. He has seven great-grandchildren, Paige, Keelan, Lauryn, Maddie and Landon Patterson, Marilla and Gilly Anne Beckley and three step-great-grandchildren, Kyle and Alicia Nickles and Guy Miller. Burial will take place in Norton Cemetery.
