Gaestel, age 100, a resident of Rivers Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center in Manitowoc, entered eternal life on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 at the care facility. George was born on June 9, 1918 in Manitowoc. He was the son of the late Arnold and Olga Stephani Gaestel.

George attended First German Ev. Lutheran Grade School and continued his education in the Manitowoc Public School System. George spent time in the CC’s and had been employed with the Manitowoc Shipbuilding overseeing various projects on all 28 submarines made here in Manitowoc during World War II.

In past years George had also been employed as a cook at Wisconsin Restaurant on Jay Street, Eck Foundry, and the Lakeview Outdoor Theater on Memorial Drive with his wife Althea managing the concession stand, and was a custodian for the Manitowoc Public School System. On August 31, 1940 he married Althea E. Fehring at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Dubuque, Iowa. She preceded him in death on April 15, 2005.

George was a longtime member of First German Ev. Lutheran Church where he had served on the Stewardship Committee and formerly was a member of the Men’s Club of the church. He is survived by one son: Dennis (Diane) Gaestel, Green Bay; one daughter: Nancy (Wayne) Johnson, New Port Richey, FL; one sister: Sylvia Eberhardt, FL; two brothers: Arnold Gaestel, Green Bay; Melvin Gaestel, Kiel; four grandchildren: Jeffrey (Patti) Johnson, Jill (Jack) Walworth, Michelle (Pat) Tousignant, Stacy (Mike) Denil; seven great grandchildren, Valerie and Alex Walworth, Luke and Jade Johnson, Lauren, Cole, and Alex Tousignant; nieces, nephews, along with other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents: Arnold and Olga Gaestel; wife: Althea; one sister: Caroline (Earl) Schwalbe; brother-in-law: Allen Eberhardt; two sisters-in-law: Karen Gaestel and Lorraine Gaestel. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev.

Mark Johnston with burial to take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc. Relatives and friends may call at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home on Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. Following the funeral service a luncheon will be held at the Harrigan Parkside Gathering Center, located on the south property of the funeral home. Memorials would be appreciated in George’s name to First German Ev.
