POLAND- George w. Davis, 76, of Poland, Ohio, died Friday May 3, 2019 at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center. Mr. Davis was born August 22, 1942 in Youngstown, a son of George and Dorothy (Gallagher) Davis. Mr. Davis was a career veteran of the military, having served both un the United States Army and Marine Corp.

Command Sergeant Major Davis assumed the position of Command Sergeant Major, 99th Army Reserve Command in Oakdale, Pa. , in October 1994. The ARCOM was comprised of more than 10,000 soldiers serving 100 units located in Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio and the state of West Virginia.

The 99th ARCOM was selected to transition in 1996 to a Regional Support Command. The 99th Regional Support Command has an estimated strength of 22,000 soldiers serving in more than 160 units. The 99th spans five states; Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.

Command Sergeant Major Davis began his military career in August of 1962 in the U.S. Marine Corps. During a five-year tour of duty, he served at Camp Lejeune, N.C., and as an Embassy Guard in Washington D.C., and Seoul, Korea. Command Sergeant major served in a variety of military police assignments in the Army National Guard from 1976 to 1988 when he entered the U.S. Army Reserve in the 99th ARCOM.

He was later selected as the Command Sergeant Major of the 1036th USARF School, the 464th Chemical Brigade and the 99th ARCOM. He was a graduate of the U.S. Marine Corps Infantry and Security Guard Schools and the Advanced and Senior Noncommissioned Officer Courses. During his military career, Command Sergeant Major Davis had been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon and Army Reserve Component Overseas Training Ribbon.

In his civilian occupation, Mr. Davis retired from Mercy Hospital as director of Risk Management. He was also Vice President and School Commander of Western Reserve Institute, Inc., in Poland, Ohio where he directed the basic training of Ohio Police Cadets. . , he leaves his son, George Davis of Poland; his daughter, Kimberly A. Costerell of Las Vegas; two granddaughters, Hailey Wong and Madison Elizabeth Wong; a grandson, Parker Timothy Wong and a brother, Larry E. Davis of Boardman. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert E. Davis and Donald Owen Davis, as well as a sister, Delores McKee.

Friends will be received Saturday May 11, 2019 from 2-5:00 p.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home in Poland where military honors will take place at 3:00 p.m. Interment will take place later at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio.
