He grew up in Crosbytown, Texas and graduated high school in Levelland, Texas Ed played football for Texas Tech his freshman year of college and joined the US Navy the following year. After his navy career ended, he found himself at the Levelland Court House needing a chain letter typed up when he met and fell in love with the Typist, Venita Jean Basye of Levelland, Texas. They were married August 9, 1948 in Levellland and raised five children together.

Ed worked hard all of his life. He was in the business of heavy equipment hauling and was gone sometimes for weeks at a time while Jean diligently and faithfully raised their children.
