Obituary for George Schafer Print George Schafer, 90, formerly of West Hartford, passed away Tuesday, February 12, 2019. He was the husband of 43 years to the late Theresa M. Schafer. A Providence, RI, native, Mr. Schafer served in the Air Force ’46-’49,and graduated with honors from Boston University in ’53.

He started his advertising career as a copywriter in Boston, moving to Hartford in ’65 and spent his career in advertising, public relations. He was president of the Advertising Club of Greater Hartford in 1970 and served on a number of Boards, including the Greater Hartford Easter Seal Society, the Connecticut Savings & Loan Association, the West Hartford Job Bank and the Cape Cod Jazz Society. In 1984 he took early retirement from Phoenix Mutual where he was 2nd VP, Corporate Communications, starting his own business as GS Creative Services.

He retired to Cape Cod in 1992. George enjoyed golf and jazz. Survivors include his daughters, Laura of Sunbury, PA, Sheila and husband Paul of Simsbury, and Linda Raia of Windsor; daughter-in-law, Debbie of Easthampton, MA; 9 grandchildren, Christine, Evan, Melissa, Mark, Caitlin, Leanna, Lynsey, Adam, Nolan and 4 great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his son Rick and grandson Paul. Celebration of George’s life will be held on Saturday February 23, from 10:00am – 12:00pm at Sheehan Hilborn Funeral Home 1084 New Britain Ave. West Hartford.
