George T. Duryea, 84, of Port Orchard passed away June 14, 2018. He was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 27, 1933 to Cyril G Duryea and Lillian Mont. A graduate of Brooklyn Tech, and community college, with a degree in electronics, he found work at Ford Instruments where he met Mary Duryea.

On April 27, 1957 they were married at St. Joseph’s Church in Oradell, New Jersey. He was drafted into the army in 1957, and after his 2 years of service, became a contract worker for the DOD. His job sent him many places including Japan and the Philippines, and he met many interesting people, such as Wernher von Braun who built the rockets for Apollo.

They’d even send him to the middle of the ocean, where they’d lower him via a cable from a helicopter to the carrier below. It didn’t matter that he couldn’t swim. He received medals and awards for his work.

One of his last trips was to Washington State, meant to be brief; he soon moved his family, settling in Port Orchard in 1962. He was hired on by the shipyard and retired in 2002. Throughout his lifetime he was active in his community; volunteering his time at Hi Joy in Port Orchard and All Star Lanes in Silverdale, and working with the adult and junior leagues.

He served as Secretary of the Service League for 35 years, which they’ve renamed in his honor. He is survived by his wife, Mary Duryea of Port Orchard; sons Tom (Deb) Duryea and Anthony Duryea; daughter Rose (Glenn) Accardi of Florida; grandsons Corey (Edie) Shomin, Jonathan Duryea, Joshua Duryea, Nicholas Accardi; and granddaughters Aushia Duryea, Madison Duryea, and Jasmine Mitchell; and many nephews, nieces, family and friends whom he loved. Visitation will be from 3 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Tuesday June 19th at Haven of Rest Funeral Home in Gig Harbor.

Burial service with military honors will be conducted at Haven of Rest on Wednesday June 20th at 1 P.M. with reception following.
