Vosmik, 86, passed away on March 7 at the VITALIA Senior Residences in Westlake. A man known for his passion for his faith, family, fly fishing and the University of Notre Dame, George had the ability to charm everyone he met with his jovial nature and a fish story or two. A resident of Rocky River since marrying his wife Deanna (née Smith Bohmer) in 1986, George was recognized in the community as a lector at St. Christopher Catholic Church, a popular fly-fishing instructor, and the Honda CRV driver with the license plate “Fly Ty”.

A Cleveland native, George spent his career improving the economies of cities in Northeast Ohio. As economic development director for Cleveland Electric Illuminating Co., he helped the city recover from bankruptcy in the 1980s. He worked with the administration of Cleveland Mayor George Voinovich to save the city half a million dollars annually in late-payment penalties.

During his 33-year career with CEI, George also supervised the building of CEI-secured industrial parks from Ashtabula to Avon Lake. Retiring from CEI in 1993, George soon tired of “polishing the brass” around the house. He took on economic development work for the cities of Strongsville and Brooklyn Heights.

During his five-year tenure with Strongsville, he developed an industrial park, which housed the Avery Dennison industrial plant. George was raised on Cleveland’s eastside, graduating from Cathedral Latin High School in 1951. He attended Notre Dame on a Naval ROTC scholarship, earning his undergraduate degree in 1955.

He earned a master’s degree in Industrial Administration from Case Institute of Technology [Case Western Reserve University]. To fulfill his military service requirement, George enlisted in the Marine Corps, training at MCB Quantico. He was assigned to the Third Marine Division in Okinawa, Japan, as an artillery officer, then Ft.

Sill, OK, as an artillery instructor. He resigned the Marines as a first lieutenant in 1958. George’s love of fishing began at 10 years old when was introduced to the sport by his father, a Cleveland police officer.

He honed his skills during his stint in Okinawa, deep-sea fishing in the coral reefs of the East China Sea. He eventually earned his International Association of Fly Casting Officials’ certification, which he held for 30 years. He taught thousands of people how to fly fish through classes at Northeast Ohio fishing clubs, including Rockwell Springs (Castalia), Deep Springs (Chardon), Mount Pleasant, North Coast Fly Fishers, and Firelands Fly Fishing.

For more than 25 years, he ran Vosmik Industries, producing and selling his handmade yellow-tailed snapper flies. His biggest fish stories originated from his trips to remote Canadian national parks and to Marathon, FL, where he resided at the Bonefish Towers. His top fishing achievements were landing his biggest freshwater fish, a 51-inch Pike in Manitoba, and, at 83 years old, his largest saltwater fish, an eight-foot, 120-pound Tarpon in the Florida Keys.

George enjoyed passing down his fishing legacy to his children and grandchildren. They all can recite George’s tip to time the forward cast by saying, “It’s nice to be from Ohio”. Always the promoter, George’s family suspects that he is still endorsing his beloved state of Ohio in heaven.

George is preceded in death by his parents Joseph and Lillian (née Divoky) Vosmik, sisters Beatrice (Malaska) and Marie (McGee), and brother Joe. He is survived by his wife, Deanna; sister Lillian (Joliat) of Lyndhurst; children: Ann (Steve) Scoglietti of Cleveland, Beth (John) Formica of Chagrin Falls; James (Sarah) Vosmik of Cortland, Matthew (Anne) Vosmik of Aurora, IL; step-daughters: Linda (Phil) Dalton of Kingwood, TX, and Lori (Jay) Inks of Rocky River; grandchildren: Connor Ruppelt; Paige, Charles, Lauren, Benjamin and Caroline Vosmik; Melanie and Jack Formica; Evan, Reed and Emily Dalton; Justin, Jenna, Julia, Jayme and Jillian Inks. A funeral mass will be held on Sat.
