Gertie Mae Alford, 82, a long time resident of Newport News, Virginia, went home to be with the Lord on May 1st, 2019. Gertie is preceded in death by her husband; Tera Alford, mother; Bettie Walker, her brothers; Samuel Walker and Clayton Walker, sister; Sandra Walker, her grandson; Sean Walker, and her great-granddaughter; Marquita Walker. Born on February 17, 1937 in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, she moved to Virginia; first Virginia Beach in the 70s, and finally to Newport News in the 80s.

she worked as a private duty nurse for 20 years. She went to school in 1987 to be a certified nursing assistant. She remained a nurse up until the time of her illness in 1999.

Gertie also took custody of five of her grandchildren and raised them until they were grown. Gertie is survived by her daughters; Gwendolyn Walker-Owens and Linda “Diane” Walker. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Keisha Owens, Joy Owens, Faith Owens, Virgil Owens, Terri “Tonya” Walker, Andre Walker, William Walker, Thomas Walker, and Chermaine Walker, as well as seventeen great-grandchildren and nine great-great-grandchildren, and a sister-in-law Evelyn, and a host of nieces and nephews.
