Gertrude Opaczewski, age 93, of Toledo, passed away on July 8, 2018. She was born on July 28, 1924 in Toledo to Ollie and Mary (Zawodny) Kujawa. Gertrude attended the former St. Stanislaus Catholic grade school and was also a former parishioner.

During WWII, she married John Opaczewski on December 16, 1943. She worked at Harriet’s Dry Goods in Holland, Grant’s downtown, and Woolco. Gert retired in 1976 after many years of dedicated work.

She was a devout parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, since 1954 where she chaired several booths and card parties, helped with Thursday bingo and bake sales, and craft shows at their yearly festivals. She also was a member of their Altar and Rosary Society where she was past treasurer for many years. Gert was also an honorary member of St. Francis Guild, the Salesian Club since 1989, the American Legion Auxiliary Holland Post 646.

Her mother taught her crocheting when she was 12 years old and made many items, sold and various craft shows. Gert was a talented seamstress, she also created the wedding dress for Mary Lou Krasniewski. She enjoyed trips to the casinos and loved to be with her numerous friends.

Gert was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, Busia, and she will be dearly missed. Gert was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, John; infant son Joseph; sisters Eveline (Benny) Zajac and Bernadine (Bob) Gorny. She is survived by her sons, Al (Mary), Walt (Deborah), John (friend Mel); daughter, Annette (Scott) Webster; grandchildren, Wade, Jason, Josh, Jacob, Ian, Gary (Kelly), Justin, Craig, Michelle (Clint), Jennifert, and Sydney; great grandchildren, Cole, Hunter, Daryan, Dawson, Tessa, Josie, Sophie, Jordan, Alex, and Aubrey.

Family and friends may visit on Thursday from 2-8:00 p.m., with a recitation of the rosary led by the Salesians and Daughters of Mary at 4:30 p.m. at the W.K. Sujkowski & Son Funeral Home, 3838 Airport Hwy. The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 13, 2018 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 10:00 a.m., where friends may visit after 9:30 a.m. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery.
