Gertrude Trudy Lamkins Matthews , May 11, 1925 — July 03, 2018

Gertrude “Trudy” Matthews peacefully slipped the bonds of earth on 3 July in Saco, ME. Trudy was born on 11 May 1925 in Hartford, CT to Sadie Purdue and Milton Irving Lamkins. She graduated from Hartford High School in 1943.

Trudy married Francis Matthews on 5 July 1947. She and Fran raised two wonderful children while she also embarked on a 25 year career in group accounting at The Travelers Insurance Company in Hartford. She retired from Travelers in 1986 but continued on a part time basis for several more years.

She and Fran resided in Manchester CT until 2006, when they moved to Kennebunk in their beloved state of Maine. Vivacious and fun loving, Trudy always enjoyed a glass of wine with friends and family. She adored watching the river go by while sitting on her deck in Kennebunk.

She was a wonderful mother and proud grandmother. She loved to read, going to Colony Beach, and especially enjoyed the theater at the Ogunquit Playhouse. She also enjoyed seeing “her boys” at the Pilot House on the occasional Friday night.

Trudy always brought a smile to all who knew her with her quick wit and innate kindness. She was stylish and always impeccably dressed. She was, in short, a class act who will be sorely missed by all friends and family.

Trudy was predeceased by her husband Francis in 2011. She is survived by her son, William Matthews and his wife Sheila of Cape Porpoise; her daughter Judith (Matthews) Qua and her husband John of Acton, ME; her two grandsons Robert Qua and his wife Nicole of Dover NH and Timothy Qua of John’s Island SC; and by a plethora of nieces, nephews and their children in the Matthews, Kavanaugh, and Lamkins families. A celebration of Trudy’s life will be held 15 September 2018 at 11 am at the Church on the Cape in Cape Porpoise, ME.
