Gladys “Joan” (Spencer) Rumple, 84, was surrounded by her family when she passed away at University Nursing Center, Upland, on Monday, March 11, 2019. She was born on December 19, 1934 in Oswego, Indiana, to the late Harry E. and Dessi Mae (Harrington) Spencer. Joan grew up on Lake Tippecanoe and was proud to have graduated from Leesburg High School in 1953.

She married the late E. Gene Rumple and settled in Van Buren, Indiana. Joan was family oriented and spent her life raising her six children and being a homemaker. She attended Hanfield United Methodist Church.

Joan was an avid mushroom hunter and passed this onto her children and grandchildren. She was also an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary and obtained lifetime membership status on March 2, 2007 in the Brown-Doyle unit 368. Joan worked many years at the American Legion as a cook and made the best fried chicken in the state.

She retired from Kosciusko Community Hospital as a Pharmacy Technician and then returned to Grant County to enjoy retirement with her family. Joan is survived by sons: Daniel Gene (Sherry) Rumple, David Lee (Lou Rae) Rumple; and daughters: Cindy Lou Rice, Tina Kay Rumple, Kandi Jo (Jeffrey) Adamson. She also has 42 grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; and 26 nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son: Jon Anthony Rumple; 2 grandchildren: Julie Wilhide and Noah Rumple; 1 great grandchild: Danika Harwood; 4 brothers: Charles, John, Robert, and Harry Jr. Spencer; and 5 sisters: Betty Lou Spencer, Rosemary Beard, June Holman, Louise Crayton, and Caroline Moyer. Arrangements were entrusted to the Jones-Smith Chapel of Armes-Hunt Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 259 N. Main St., Upland, Indiana, where a visitation will be held from 2-6 pm, Thursday, March 14, 2019. The funeral service will be at 11:00 am, Friday, March 15, 2019, at the funeral home, with Rev.

Tim Helm officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory. Memorials may be made to Auguste’s Cottage Memory Care Unit, who provided her with amazing care over the past year at University Nursing Center, 1564 University Blvd.
