OBITUARY Gladys Laverne Griessmer September 7, 1915 – January 16, 2019 Gladys “Gee Gee” Griessmer born September 7, 1915 in Cleveland, Ohio went to be with the Lord on January 16, 2019. It is challenging to find words to describe such an amazing lady. Gee Gee was loved and admired by those fortunate enough to know her, from family and friends, to caregivers and acquaintances.
Her warm smile, the twinkle in her eye, selflessness, sense of humor, love of life and her spirited personality were infectious. She was kind. One of her goals was to practice a random act of kindness each day.
She volunteered over 500 hours at All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg. She did love living in St. Pete and often referred to it as her home. She also loved to laugh and to make others laugh by reciting one of her many witticisms.
Gee Gee had a passion for music and singing, which prompted her to establish the Aston Gardens Chorus in 2007. She was a nature lover and enjoyed shell collecting and gardening. She was an artist in many mediums.
She loved crafting and painting. Gee Gee was an avid reader and card player. She loved sweets, especially chocolate, dark chocolate.
She loved life and she loved people, family most of all and she loved God. Gee Gee proudly lived independently until recently. The family would like to extend our heartfelt and sincere gratitude to the dedicated and compassionate members of the Aston Gardens family for the care, support, compassion and love shown to Gee Gee for over twelve years.
She loved living at Aston Gardens. She loved her friends. She loved being involved in many of the activities.
Her family believes this helped her happily live such a long life. After all, her motto was “use it, or lose it”. The family would also like to thank the dedicated caregivers at Lutz Healthcare and Rehab Center.
Preceded in death by her husband of 43 years Arthur “Art” Griessmer and sisters Matilda “Tillie” Stuckey and Jean Gagyi. Survived by her devoted daughters Carol Higdon and Nancy Usher and son-in-law Ken Usher, her loving granddaughter Devon Polo, her husband Robbie Polo, her “sunshine” and great-grandson Austin Polo and great-grandson Jacob “Thor” Blankenship and sisters Alice Ramlow 95 and Shirley Slavin 82, several nephews and nieces, extended family members and close friends. God saw her getting tired when a cure was not to be.
He closed His arms around her and whispered “Come with Me”. In tears we saw her sinking. We watched her fade away.
Our hearts were almost broken, she fought so hard to stay. But when we saw her sleeping, so peacefully, free from pain, We would not wish her back to suffer that again. So treasure her, Lord, in your garden of rest, For here on earth she was one of the best.
A Celebration of Life and Memorial Service for Gee Gee will be held at Aston Gardens, date and time to be announced.
