She was the devoted wife of the late Henry George Smith , devoted mother of five children, Stephanie M. Zimmerman (the late Richard B. Zimmerman), Kevin F. Smith (Joann Springart Smith), Brian M. Smith, Robert H. Smith (Wendy Kruger Smith), Sean G. Smith (Monique Slyper Smith), grandmother of, Richard, Seanna, Erin, Bryan, Sophia, Chelsey, Chanel, Trebor, Bryton, Kaitlyn, great grandmother of, Ronan, Fiona, Dylan, Colette, Jack, Norah, Damien, Alana; brother Fred and sister Anastasia. Born in Far Rockaway, New York, January 15, 1926, to the late Frederick and Anastasia Young, Gloria was a devoted mother, and an accomplished artist.
Gloria received her art training at the Art Students League and the National Academy of Design, both in New York City. She attended Nassau Community College, New York, where she majored in art, and Brevard Community College, Florida, for architectural drafting. Gloria studied with the prominent Modernist Yasuo Kuniyoshi, and with the well-known watercolorists George Tschamber and Yukio Tashiro, pastel artist Audrey Marlow, and attended several painting seminars in England.
Although primarily a portrait painter, all phases of art appealed to Gloria. After raising five children, she worked for many years as a graphic artist. She exhibited in many juried shows, as well as solo, and taught workshops in oil and pastel.
Visitation will be held Sunday, June 2, 7-9 PM, and Monday, June 3 8:30-9:30 AM, at Burns Funeral Home, 9708 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19114. Followed by her Funeral Mass 10 AM, Monday June 3, St. Katherine of Siena Catholic Church, 9700 Frankford Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19114. Internment, Tuesday, June 4.
