Graciela “Chela” Sabina Cueva, 77, beloved wife of Gaston Ricardo Cueva of Sandy, Utah, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 8th, 2018, after suffering a series of strokes over the past seven weeks.
Chela was born to Teodomiro Quispe Otarola and Luz Dina Ghezzi on September 20th, 1941 in Ica, Peru. One of seven sisters, she was raised proud of both her Peruvian and Italian heritage. She became a teacher by profession and by lifelong practice.
She loved to read and keep up with world events. You could always find Chela reading the newspaper from beginning to end. She (like her father) was very politically conscious.
Her political beliefs were defined by her compassion for the oppressed and disadvantaged. Civility and compassion for those less fortunate can easily be marked as cornerstones of Chela’s life. Chela was always a lover of people and a strong servant to God.
Her favorite scripture was Paul’s epistle to the Corinthians about charity. Chela met and fell in love with Gaston Cueva, who would become her constant companion through their 51 years of marriage. They were inseparable in life and look forward to an eternal reunion in the life to come.
Chela and Gaston were pioneers in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Ica and Lima Peru and dedicated their lives to the service of God. They were sealed together with their three children in the Lima temple in 1986. After their move to Utah in 1990, they’ve remained faithful members of the church, servants to God and pillars in their community.
Chela was a lady, very refined and special. Everyone that knew Chela remembered her for her intelligence, elegance and kindness. She had a strong love for small fluffy dogs.
Chela loved fashion and design and was seemingly always dressed-up and well put-together which combined with her compassion and kind heart, made her easy to love. Chela was a beloved wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend. Survived by her husband (Gaston), daughters Sally Palmer (Steven), Jeanette Varas (Daniel), and son, Christian Cueva (Mike).
She was the proud grandmother “Nana” of six grandchildren (Chella, Chaz, Jaycie, Elijah, Genesis, and Noah). Chela’s belief in eternal families gave her great solace and she is looking forward to being reunited with her family and friends in the life to come. Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 17th, 2018 at 10:30 am at the Midvale Utah North Stake at 7699 S. Chad Street in Midvale.
A viewing will be held the hour prior to the funeral. Interment, Sandy City Cemetery, Sandy, Utah.
