OBITUARY Guenter Goldsmith November 12, 1925 – October 15, 2018 Goldsmith, Guenter, October 15, 2018; born November 12, 1925 in Hanover, Germany; beloved husband of Antoinette “Ann” Goldsmith and the late Diane Patricia Goldsmith; dear father and father-in-law of Judy (Max) Bierman, Steve (Lexie) Goldsmith and Harold “Hal” (Marcia) Goldsmith; dear stepfather of Jim and Bob Feldhaus; dear grandfather of Cody and Casey Bierman, Matthew and Daniel Goldsmith, Jacob and Benjamin Goldsmith and Madison Feldhaus; dear brother-in-law of Grace McGovern; dear uncle, cousin and friend. Mr. Goldsmith was a holocaust survivor. He escaped Nazi Germany during June, 1941 with the assistance of Jewish Children & Family Services and was the sole survivor of his immediate family.

He attended Soldan High School, where he learned English, ran track and made many friends. Upon graduation, he enlisted in U.S. Army, trained as a paratrooper and communications expert. He earned two Bronze Service Stars for participation in Battle of the Bulge and Rhineland operation.

He participated in the Allied invasion of Germany during 1945 when he parachuted across the Rhine River into Germany with the 17th Airborne Division and served as an advance scout until the surrender of Germany. He remained in Germany as part of the U.S. Army’s clean up operations. Upon his return to St. Louis, he attended the St. Louis College of Pharmacy, where he became a lifetime member and active participant in the AZO Fraternity.

He was active in the college’s alumni association for many years and served as president of the college’s centennial celebration. He operated several independent pharmacies in the St. Louis area, including Forsyth Drug, Medical West Pharmacy and Goldsmith Pharmacy. He served as a speaker at the St. Louis Holocaust Museum and Learning Center for many years, speaking to school groups at the museum and at schools throughout Missouri and Illinois.

He was appointed by the Governor of Missouri to serve as a board member on the state’s inaugural Holocaust Education and Awareness Commission. Visitation Thursday, October 18, 11:15 am at United Hebrew Congregation, 13788 Conway Road followed by a funeral service at 12:00 pm. Interment Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

Memorial contributions preferred to St. Louis Holocaust Museum and Learning Center, Jewish Children & Family Services or College of Pharmacy.
