Guy Frederick Miller July 05, 1932 – December 21, 2018 Share this obituary Local Florists Sign Guestbook Guy Miller passed away on December 21, 2018, in Charlottesville, Va. at the age of 86. Born in Albany, New York, on July 5, 1932, he was the only child of Frederick Lansing Miller and Julia Shirley Paland Miller.

He graduated from Milne High School in Albany, NY in 1950, and from Duke University in 1954. He was commissioned in the U.S. Navy as ensign and made several voyages to Europe. After working as a mechanical engineer for several years, Guy decided to go to Law School and graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1966.

He worked for IBM from 1966 to 1987. Guy and his wife, Mary Ann lived and travelled all over the East Coast and Europe during his legal career. He made frequent travels to Lagos; Saudi Arabia; Zimbabwe; and Nice in France.

Their favorite assignments were Paris, France and Hursley, England where they made many lifelong friends. Further travels took them to Russia; China; Japan and Egypt. Guy’s interests during his long and happy retirement included woodworking where he focused on furniture and guitar making.

He loved hands on crafts, puppetry, beekeeping, Morris dancing and helping children. He learned magic and had a passion to support and entertain children as a regular volunteer at Venable Elementary school in Charlottesville, Virginia. He created many exhibits for the Charlottesville Discovery Museum, including a working indoor beehive.

He joined the Albemarle Morris Men in the 1990s. With them, he spent many hours dancing his homemade horse “Spot” during Morris festivals, the Barracks Road Christmas Parade and First Night performances. Guy was active in the Central Virginia Beekeepers Association and The English Speaking Union.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ann Miller; his daughter, Anne Novak and her husband, Raleigh of Amherst, Virginia; his daughter, Carole Clarke and her husband, Michael of Northampton, England; four grandchildren: Andrew Ganong, Hillary Schrauwers (Jorrit), Libby Mitchell (Dana), Ali LIneham (David), and seven great-grandchildren: Evie, Toby and Lydia, Mary Ann and Lucy, Katherine and Beatrice, and a dear son-in-law, Steve Ganong. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 1, 2019 (time will be determined) at St. Paul’s Memorial Church in Charlottesville, Virginia. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
