OBITUARY H. Paul Simon October 19, 1923 – November 1, 2018 Huey Paul Simon, a retired attorney and certified public accountant, died on (day of week & month). He was born on October 19, 1923 in Lafayette, Louisiana. He was valedictorian of his high-school class in 1940.
He graduated in 1943 from Southwestern Louisiana Institute (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette) where he served on the faculty as an assistant professor teaching all of the advanced accounting and taxation courses in 1944 and 1945 after which he left to enter the Tulane Law School. While in Tulane Law School from 1945 to 1947, Mr. Simon served on the accounting staff of the International CPA firm of Haskins & Sells (now named Deloitte & Touche) where, while a law student, he worked on financial audits of Tulane University among other clients of the firm. He served as president of Tulane’s Chapter of the International Legal Fraternity of Phi Delta Phi.
In 1947, Mr. Simon became, at the age of 24, the 11th individual to become both a lawyer and a certified public accountant in the history of the State of Louisiana. He was a principal in Haskins & Sells until 1957 when he joined and became a partner in the law firm of Deutsch, Kerrigan & Stiles. In 1979, he left that firm to become the senior founding partner of the law firm of Simon, Peragine, Smith & Redfearn.
Mr. Simon was the author of many professional articles and publications. He served as estate, gifts and trust editor of the national publication The Tax Times and served as associate editor of The Louisiana CPA. He served on the board of editors of the Tulane Law Review and later served until his death on its advisory board of editors.
Mr. Simon was a member of the Tulane Law School Dean’s Council and for 36 years he was a member of the Program Committee of the Tulane Tax Institute after which he became an emeritus member. He served on the board of directors of International House and of the World Trade Center. Mr. Simon was a member of the New Orleans Bar Assn.
, the Louisiana State Bar Assn. , the American Bar Assn. , the Louisiana Society of CPAs, the American Institute of CPAs , the American Judicature Society, and was a Fellow in the American College of Tax Counsel.
He was in the first group of individuals to become board-certified tax attorneys in Louisiana. Until he retired, he was included in every issue of The Best Lawyers in America. He was a member of the Bureau of Governmental Research, the Council for a Better Louisiana, the Public Affairs Research Council, and the New Orleans Metropolitan Crime Commission.
Mr. Simon was an avid golfer throughout his life and was at peace with the world on the golf course at New Orleans Country Club for several decades. After residing in New Orleans more than sixty years, Mr. Simon moved to Covington in 2005 because his home on Canal Blvd. was destroyed by flooding following Hurricane Katrina and he resided in Crestwood Estates until he moved to the Christwood Retirement Community in 2012 where he was a resident at the time of his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents Jules and Ida Rogère Simon, by several siblings and by Carolyn Perkins Simon to whom he was married for more than fifty years until her death in 1999. He is survived by a son Dr. John C. Simon, a granddaughter Alexis L. Simon, two grandsons Joseph C. Simon and Evan P. Simon, all in Covington, and two sisters Herdy S. Guidry in Lafayette and Cecile S. Jernigan in Vida, Texas. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend the Graveside Services at 11:00 am on Thursday, November, 8, 2018 at All Saints Mausoleum in Metairie Cemetery.
Visitation hours will be observed from 11:00 A.M. until service time in Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd. New Orleans, LA.
