Harold Joseph Bauer, 93, New Salem, died Saturday, July 14, 2018, at CHI St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, July 18, 2018, at Zion Lutheran Church, New Salem, with Rev. Russell Fitch officiating.

Burial will be at Zion Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 pm on Tuesday, July 17, 2018, at Elm Crest Manor, New Salem and continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Harold was born August 28, 1924, to Henry and Anna Bauer on the family farm near Blue Grass, ND.

He was baptized and confirmed at the Otter Creek Lutheran Church. He attended a nearby rural school. Harold worked with his father and brothers on the farm and with his Dad’s Threshing crew.

On October 18, 1953, he married the love of his life, Shirley Tschaekofske. They lived on the family farm, where they raised their children. In 1986, they moved to New Salem.

They enjoyed many years camping, fishing, traveling, and playing with grandchildren. Harold enjoyed woodworking and having coffee with his friends. He was active in his church, serving as elder, trustee, and finance committee.

He was a member of the school board at his children’s rural school. In January 2014, they moved to Elm Crest Manor Assisted Living Apartments, where he resided until his death. Harold is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley Bauer; three children, Diane (Terrence) Mosbrucker, New Salem, Howard (Sandy) Bauer, Mandan, and Gloria (David) Berg, Stanton; 11 grandchildren, Jamie (Brooke) Mosbrucker, Kristen (Joel) Just, Carrie (Jesse) Maier, Jared (Stacy) Mosbrucker, Kathryn (Eric) Erhardt, Amanda (Christopher) Morrow, Mathew Bauer, Ryan (Andrea) Berg, Justin Berg, Allen (fiancé, Crystal) Berg, and Adam (fiancé, Abigail) Berg; 18 great grandchildren, Paige, Libby, & Will Mosbrucker, Bradyn, Brycen, Emily, and Braxton Just, Hallie, Ethan, Bailey, and Taven Maier, Hadley, Coleton, and Cullen Mosbrucker, Brilee, Lyla, Rose, and Eli Erhardt; one sister, Delores (Wilbert) Kunz, New Salem; one brother, Erhart (Anita) Bauer, Portland, OR; 3 sisters-in-law, Laura (Ingram) Opp, New Salem, Darene (Bob) Imamoto, Roseville, CA, and Marlene Tschaekofske, Bismarck; and many nieces and nephews.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Lea and Erwin Tschaekofske; siblings, Ervin (Agnes), Verna Dockter, Victor (Lee), Calvin (Audrey), and Donald; and brother-in-law, Jim Tschaekofske.
