OBITUARY Harold Bowley October 21, 1932 – January 22, 2019 Harold E. Bowley, 86, formerly of Canterbury, passed peacefully on Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at Elliot Hospital from a sudden illness with his daughter Lee and granddaughter Lindsay by his side. Born October 21, 1932, and raised in East Kingston, New Hampshire, he was the son of the late Dewey Bowley, Sr. and Lulu (Hammond) Bowley. Harold had been employed by the State of New Hampshire for the Department of Transportation for over 20 years.
Due to a work-related injury, he was forced into early retirement in 1988. This provided Harold the opportunity to pursue his passion of photography. He attended the Manchester Institute of Arts and Sciences from 1990-1992, receiving his certificate in the Photography Program.
He went on to share his skill, knowledge and talent, teaching a few classes there. Two of Harold’s photographs were selected for publication on the front covers of the 1992 and 1996 Canterbury Annual Town Reports. Several other photos were also included within the publications.
Harold’s photographs also grace the walls of several Concord area businesses. He was a proud member of the American Photography Association. He served his church community for many years at Christ the King Parish as Eucharistic Minister and Usher.
Harold loved taking drives, camera in tow, stopping along the way to capture the beauty around him. He also loved camping with his wife Janice and two dogs, especially at their favorite vacation place Lake Champlain, VT. Fitness and nutrition were very important to Harold.
He remained active and exercised well into his senior years. When at home, you would often find him relaxing in the sunroom with his wife, enjoying the views, wildlife and bird-watching. In addition to his parents, Harold was predeceased by his wife Janice, and two sisters, Stella and Helene.
He is survived by his daughter Lela Holloran of Concord, his son Lewis Bowley and spouse Julie of Florida, and daughter Ruth Bowley and spouse Megan of Franklin. He also leaves a brother, Dewey Bowley, Jr. and spouse Judy, five grandchildren: Lindsay Holloran, Eric Holloran, James Collishaw, Jr., Justin Collishaw and Matthew Bowley, and eight great-grandchildren. He also leaves several neices and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:00 noon on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at Christ the King Parish (formerly St. John the Evangelist Church), 72 South Main Street, Concord. Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Canterbury in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The American Cancer Society or Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
Arrangements are entrusted to the Bennett Funeral Home of Concord.
