Obituary for Harold I. Brown Harold I. Brown, age 93, of King, WI, formerly of Superior, WI, passed away on Saturday, June 23rd, 2018 at Wisconsin Veterans Home-Ainsworth Hall, King, under the care of Hospice. He was born on January 23, 1925 in Superior, a son of the late Ira Aaron and Bergloit Dagney (Mykleby) Brown. He joined the Army in 1943 with the 42nd Rainbow Division and served in World War II.
Harold started his service in Marseille, France. His division helped relieve the forces at the Battle of the Bulge, and he was among the first troops to aid in the liberation of prisoners at the German concentration camp at Dachau. He continued his service in France, Germany and Austria.
Harold was a decorated WW II veteran and was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, the Knight of the Legion of Honor medal awarded by the French government and several other service medals. He was honorable discharged in April 1946. After returning to Superior, Harold married Lyda Kaiser in 1947 and together they raised four children.
He worked at the former King Midas flour mill and O’Brien Oil Co. as a fuel driver and later service repairman. He went on to become secretary/treasurer of Teamsters Local 288 and then vice president of Teamsters Union 346, retiring in 1985. Harold and Lyda moved to Wascott, WI, where he served as town chairman.
After Lyda’s death, Harold returned to Superior to be closer to his family. He was a volunteer for the Veterans Administration, transporting veterans from Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin to and from the Veterans Hospital in Minneapolis. He was a member of the Douglas County Board of Supervisors, serving on many committees, was the President of Douglas County Commission of Aging, and member of the Duluth Transit Authority Board.
He was recognized as an “Ageless Hero” by the coalition of Wisconsin Aging Groups for his service and commitment to the organization. He attended many reunions throughout the years with fellow members of the 42nd Rainbow Division. Harold is survived by sons, Jeffrey (Mary) of Atlanta, GA, Rickford (Kathy), Superior, Conrad (Penny), South Range, and daughter, Connie (Randy) Clausen of Amherst, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Lyda in 1985, two brothers, Horace and Ira, two sisters, Evelyn Waller and Violette Johnson and grandson, Randy Anderson. As per Harold’s wishes, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, contributions are requested to be made to the Douglas County Humane Society.
