Harold Jean Simmons April 14, 1926 – December 27, 2018 Harold Jean Simmons, 92, Sioux Falls passed away on December 27, 2018 at the Sanford Hospice Centennial Cottage. Harold was born April 14, 1926 to Jean Bower Simmons and Edna Olga Strand in Quinnesec, Michigan. The moved to Spencer, SD in 1931 and Harold attended Spencer grade school for grades 1 thru 6.

They moved to Hawkins, Wisconsin where he attended grades 7 thru 9. They moved back to Spencer where he graduated high school in 1944. Harold enlisted in the U.S. Army in October of 1944.

He served in the South Pacific and was stationed in Japan for 1 year. He was discharged in November of 1946. He met Phyllis Maverette Martin on a blind date in Mitchell.

They were married on September 18, 1947 in Spencer, SD. They lived many places around the country but Sioux Falls, SD is where they made their home. They were blessed with the birth of a son, Michael, one day before their first anniversary on September, 17, 1948.

They would have a daughter, Linda, on November 22, 1955. Born: April 14, 1926 Death: December 27, 2018 Harold had many different types of work during the years. He was a carpenter, a salesman of tires and heavy equipment; he sold pianos, organs and tv’s.

The last 20 years he was a transport driver for Metz Baking Company. Harold and Phyllis retired on the same day in 1988. Harold was a member of John M. Bliss VFW Post #628 in Sioux Falls and was a member of Sunnycrest United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his daughter, Linda Martin; his daughter-in-law, Dagna Simmons; two grandsons, Todd (Shannon) Simmons and Brian Martin; two granddaughters, Tracy (Corey Strawn) Simmons and Katie (Dylan) Kratochvil; a granddaughter-in-law, Dylan Martin; 2 great granddaughters, Kelly Simmons and Sydni Strawn; four great grandsons, Hunter Strawn, Bear Martin, Beau Martin and one Kratochvil on the way; his brother, Arlin “Pete” (Pat) Simmons, his sisters, Sally (Al) Klaudt and Sara Streich. He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis, on January 24, 2017, his son Mike Simmons, his son-in-law, Pat Martin and his parents. His memorial service will begin at 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at Sunnycrest United Methodist Church in Sioux Falls.

The family will be present one hour prior to greet friends.
