Obituary for Harold Russell Hunt, Jr. Hunt Jr., Harold Russell Portage, MI Passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at the age of 86. Russ was born in Evansville, IN on March 22, 1932, the son of the late Harold Russell Hunt, Sr. and Verna Louise Hasseries Hunt. He graduated from Hillsboro High School in Nashville, TN, where he earned a scholarship to attend Harvard University.

He graduated from Harvard Cum Laude in 1953. He later attended University of Chicago where he earned a PhD in Inorganic Chemistry in 1957. He worked summers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, where he met his wife Doris Stephens.

Russ and Doris were united in marriage on July 14, 1956. After graduation from University of Chicago he was employed by Georgia Tech as a professor in the School of Chemistry until retirement in 1995. He published articles in the fields of chemical education and inorganic chemistry.

He wrote a laboratory manual in 1975, which is still in use today. He was an Eagle Scout who was active in the Eagle Scout Association and The Order of the Arrow, and served as a scout leader in Atlanta. Harold was a cave explorer and along with his father, children and friends explored many caves in Tennessee, Georgia, New York, and Vermont.

His other hobbies included model airplanes, photography, folk music, woodworking and camping. He was a member of Pathfinder Church in Portage. He was preceded in death by his infant son, Allen Russell Hunt; and one sister, Marilyn Anderton Bolton.

He is survived by his loving wife of sixty-two years, Doris Hunt; two children, Gregory (Jacqui) Hunt of Houston, TX and Rebecca (Steve) Davis of Portage, MI; six grandchildren, Jessica (Michael) Correa of Seattle, WA, Kate Veltman of Cleveland, OH, Leslie (Asmir) Horic of Holland, MI, Alex Hunt of San Francisco, CA, Eric Hunt of Atlanta, GA, and Christopher Hunt of Houston, TX; one great-grandchild, Kenan Horic of Holland, MI. In accordance with Russ’s wishes cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 East Centre Ave.

, Portage, MI 49002. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, June 22, 2018 at Pathfinder Church, 8740 S. Westnedge Ave. , Portage, MI 49002, officiated by Brother Don Wolfgang.
