He spent most of the war on Attu Island, the westernmost island in the Aleutian Island chain off Alaska. On returning from the war, Wayne resumed his work at Armour and Company and was promoted to salesman. After Armour closed their Steubenville branch, he found employment with Weirton Steel Corporation, a division of National Steel Corporation.

Starting as a laborer he was promoted to pipefitter in their construction division and retired as a foreman. He was a longtime member of the First Christian Church of Steubenville where he served as a deacon and elder. Wayne was mechanically skilled and enjoyed building motorbikes, go carts, walls, patios, porches, and garages.
